kisses & noodles

It is a Japanese tradition to eat noodles on new year's eve,
a tradition based on people's association of eating the long noodles
with “crossing over from one year to the next,” and also with longer life.

I will be having noodles as I give my husband a midnight kiss.
I hope you will be with your loved ones this new year's eve whatever your traditions are.

Thank you all for visiting my humble blog,
I appreciate your support and encouragement.
I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

over the mountains

Over the hill through the slippery canyon and over the Rocky Mountains,

we finally arrived at a small college town.

We were able to spend precious time together.

またね
See you next time.

a gift

A boy brought me a note from across the street shortly after I took my kitchen gift.
He is a beautiful little boy trapped in a grown man's body.

His note is the most precious Christmas gift I have received this year.

He has reminded me the true meaning of Christmas.

kitchen gift

I baked last minute kitchen gifts for friends and neighbors.

Spiced nuts with two different flavors.

It went down to 1ºF/-17.22ºC last night; a perfect night to bake.

Almost buried in snow, nowhere to go today.
Sitting here staring at the Christmas tree.

Is it time yet?

holiday fishing

It has become an annual event.
My husband needs to use up his vacation by the end of the year or he'll lose them.

He ends up taking a long vacation in December.

 He is a simple man
who loves Mother Nature.

He went ice fishing today and brought home two16"rainbows.

The tree is up.
Our tree is like someone opened a toy chest and had a ball.

Santa

Did you see her wish list?

Yes, I did.  Gardening tools!

There were two books also.

We did give her many new friends this year.
Maybe we'll grant her one small wish for Christmas

However,
she's been writing to her mother often
and staying away from the yarn shop for a long time.

Well, she may receive more than one then.

By the way, how's the diet going?

Who are you talking about?

Sigh,
"We" are not doing too well...

and
make memories.

We can see the neighbor's display from our back door.

Even the gardengate needs a little dress up.

Some emails from Japan did not arrive in my mailbox
and I was told that easiest fix would be to set-up a gmail account.
That is what I did today.
The mail box is linked to my gmail account now.
My apologies to anyone who could not reach me using the old email address.
I hope you'll try again.

This isn't related but I noticed that my garden condition under the banner is gone!
(the elevation, temperatures, precipitation etc.)
What's happening?  Has this happened to you?
hmmm
I shall wait and see...

handmade

At least one handmade gift for each of them.
The slippers were knitted in a hurry.

Stay warm with the washable wool.

Getting ready for Christmas
 I feel restless

protection

Colorado winter is hard on evergreen plants especially when they have no snow to protect them.
I sprayed anti-dessicant on them to prevent winter burn

I was especially concerned about a dwarf daphne in the front rock garden.
It is less than 4" tall, tiny, tiny daphne.

Spring 2011

Daphne x medfordensis 'Lawrence Crocker'

Just a little extra protection for
when the snow blanket melts away and she gets exposed.

I have several rock garden berms but most of them need makeovers.

Spring 2011
Summer 2011

Placing stones "just right" is not an easy task and
my rock placements don't feel "right" to me yet.
Rock garden is my favorite style of garden maybe because
I can grow so many tiny plants in such a confined space.
I do like tiny plants.

Rock gardeners tend to use Latin names only when they talk about plants
and sometimes it's hard for me to follow conversations.
I think I'm Latin challenged.
I bought a botanical Latin book but I didn't enjoy studying it.
... I gave up.

Ahem...
I can pronounce "Tetsukabuto" pumpkin or "Hakuro Nishiki" willow really really well!
