garden cleaning 2015

I'm glad to see worker bees are back in the garden .

Crocuses seem popular with rabbits, too.   munch, munch, munch

The poisonous daffodils are untouched...don't you wonder how wild creatures know what not to eat?

I couldn't work in the garden due to strong wind for two days.
It is raining and snowing today, and spring garden cleaning has been slow going.

First thing I did last weekend was cut back the ornamental grasses.

I cut them back hard when new shoots starts to appear to let the sunshine inside to promote new growth.

I normally wait to cut them back until spring not just for winter interests, but to increase some added protection since our garden lacks snow cover most of  winter.

Sedum flower stalks, berries, hips and colorful branches all contributed much needed interests to our bleak long winter by adding colors and movement.  Job well done!

A backstage scene here.

We can't leave home without these automatic watering systems during the growing season.

Much less interesting...,but very necessary.

Now, fun begins -selecting plants kind of fun, that is.

ºF

Nice daytime temps.
Things are looking up!

The first garden clean up this weekend.

Happy Spring Everyone!

Vermeer /

Johannes Vermeer    Girl with a pearl earring

Denver is a cow town.

There is nothing wrong with that, but I've heard people complaining about lack of good museums in Colorado, especially people from back east.  Well, I'm not from back east, but I have to agree that Denver's museums are not "world class".  Having grown up with the culture so appreciative of art, first class exhibitions were available everywhere and all the time.  Aside from many museums, most tall retail buildings in Japan have a designated floor which they use for top notch exhibitions.  I've seen works of M.C. Escher, Paul Klee and many more in Japan's department store buildings.  It probably helps to have a very low crime rate to be realistic.

My hometown is the home to one of Japan's four national museums (not counting the science museums), and I had an opportunity to see Vermeer's paintings when I was in Japan a few years ago.

It was breathtaking.

I do miss visiting them, but don't mind reserving my arty outings to when I'm in back east -Far East.
Besides, I'd rather be busy going to the mountains, viewing rock formations, checking out dinosaur footprints, smelling wildflowers, surprised by bluebirds and mountain goats -things like that when I'm in Colorado.

But, it's still winter here, and I don't ski.

Luckily there is cable and On Demand.

We've watched a truly excellent documentary movie this weekend.

                                                                 "Tim's Vermeer"  trailer

Holy cow!  It gave me goosebumps.

I hope you'll make an effort to see it if you haven't already.

lavender therapy

lavender "Munstead"  July  2013,  after a rain shower

Colorado is in a midst of deep freeze now -my garden buried under snow.  sigh..
I'd love to open up the windows and get fresh air, but, well, it's 12ºF/-11ºC outside.
There is so little we can do to escape from deep winter and just think about spring.

How about aromatherapy?

There are many essential oils to choose from at a store, so many cute bottles lined up.
My hand automatically stretches to -lavender, every time.

There are candles, potpourris, aroma oils, and such. We have many ways to introduce scents to our homes, but I'm rather sensitive to strong and/or sweet scents and getting headaches from them is all too common.   It has to be subtle, and it has to be natural.

This is an aroma oil ring made of ceramics.  I had used it a long time ago and didn't like how strong and harsh the scent it produced was, and so was put away deep in my "whatever drawer".
We have started to use LED light bulbs recently, and I'd decided to give it another try.
Because LED emits very little heat, it worked wonderfully.
I thought I might try different scent and sniffed out all the samples at a shop.  There was a very delicate rose oil I really liked -now I await a big sale.  (Have you seen their price!?!)

A few years ago Colorado outfitted our traffic lights with LED bulbs in attempt to save the energy cost, but LED bulbs couldn't melt the accumulating snow in the winter, and caused problems everywhere.  I wonder how they've coped with that?

Back at a store -a liquor store this time.  I was so attracted to this cheerful bottle.  A very refreshing German Riesling.

My house smells like spring, my wine tastes like spring.  Just please hurry up, Spring!
