U. S. Mail

We tend to get things done with convenient emails and instant massages nowadays.
Still, my heartbeat skips when I receive real mail that the sender has actually touched.

With the news of another postage increase in February, I quickly packed a small box.

I bought a micro scale to weigh ever shrinking allowed baggage for traveling; the kind you hook whatever you want to weigh. This was so handy to weigh a package. (I put it in a plastic bag to weigh)

Filling out a customs form for international mail can be complicated; the necessary form changes depending on weight, size and value.
Even though I'm usually sending gifts, I still need to list everything, and unfortunately this takes the "Surprise!" aspect out of  "the gift".
But I'm thankful that despite all the difficulties they are having, U.S. Mail is still available and affordable.

This is for Mom, hopefully it'll get there before Valentin's Day.

And for the scale, I hope my personal fisherman will find it useful, too.

一石二鳥 : "kill two birds with one stone" 「ひとつの石で2羽の鳥を殺す(狩る?)」

wrong pumpkin

I was happy to find out that
a grocery store in my town started to carry Japanese pumpkins " kabocha".

The cashier asked me what it was because the UPC sticker was missing for scanning.

Come to think of it,
I have been asked about the napa (Chinese cabbage) and daikon (Japanese radish) at the register, too.

There are not many Asians in town.

Years ago, a little girl in a shopping-cart pointed a finger at me and screamed to her mother.
"What's wrong with her!"

I wept at home.

What's wrong with me...?
What did that stunned looking young mother say to her child?

Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. day.

I thought about that little girl.

Colorado waits

I found this video when I was visiting the Colorado Parks & Wildlife.
From moose, bighorn sheep to rattle snakes, we all call this extreme Colorado home.

Hunters and hunted -everyone is waiting for Spring to arrive.

winter wreath

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, our house is slowly finding some normalcy.

All the decorations and candle lights by the windows put away.
A red towel in the powder-room has been changed back to earth tone.

And the wreath.
I always wonder what to do with my front door when I take down the holiday wreath.
I'd like to make it welcoming, especially in the winter.

I spent an afternoon making a new wreath.
I have to be careful what to use because most natural materials quickly get freeze-dried and brittle.

Do I hear burlap is in style?
Well of course I have them at hand, I'm a gardener!

I have a hard time knowing when to stop when making something.
Less is more, less is more, less is more.

An updated winter wreath!

Too mummy-ish?
Oh, well.

Happy New Year 2014

"Twenty years from now
you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore. Dream. Discover."
