Cowboy Caviar

I've been harvesting my corn- a few ears a day.
I made the Cowboy Caviar after I microwaved the freshly picked corn.
There are so many variations available, but I like this simple recipe
( I cut the recipe in half; made about 2 cups)

The avocado stays fairly fresh since you mix them with lime juice,
but my Hispanic friend told me that storing the dish with a pit will keep the avocado fresh!

It's wonderful as dip, salad and side dish.
I even like it mixed with rice.

I try everything with rice at least once. ;o)

How are you?

When daisies start to bloom allover the garden,

I can only garden early in the morning.

It's blistering hot even with a big hat.

I wish I had more shade.

Take it easy.

food crops

I thought about pulling out my vegetables right after the big hailstorm in June.
Boy, am I glad I didn't!

Sage went on a drying rack

Garlic were mixed with olive oil for cooking- most of them will be frozen.
I have enough to make additional pesto and tapenade. Yum!

*For easy peeling, soak the garlic cloves in cold water for 10~20 min.

I planted a few gorgeous 'shiso' perilla plants in the new-empty spot.
I'd like to see them drop seeds for next year.

Strawberries have recovered enough to produce some berries here and there
even though most leaves were stripped by the hail.
Tomatoes are growing just dandy.

Just looking at them give me energies, they really do!

perovskia atriplicifolia 'Little Spire'

Cold hardy and drought tolerant Russian sage seems to love Colorado.
He tries to multiply by underground runner and by seeds in my garden.
Next to our driveway, there are a few compact selection 'Little Spire'
I planted one plant, but now have five, or maybe six-?

Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Filigran'

In the back, three cut leaf Russian sages 'Filigran' look over the pond -again, I planted only one.
This selection has finely dissected silver foliage and has the lovely misty look that I love.

They both have upright growing habit and don't require any support here.

geranium 'Rozanne"

'Rosanne' is working hard as always, skilfully spreading.
I don't have to cut her back all-season.

platycodon  (Dwarf )

I have a dwarf balloon flower in the North facing rockgarden.
I'm happy to see many "balloons"on it.

It's been hot.
The blue flowers are helping me cool down a bit - at least in my mind.

Daily Temp. : High 34.4°C/94°F, Low 14.4°C/58°F

chocolate flower

Berlandiera lyrata Chocolate flower

This flower truly is chocolate-scented.
If you can find it,
plant it,
and
let a child smell the flower.
You will be rewarded with a biggest smile.
Guaranteed.

I love beautiful designer garden, but I'd rather have a playful garden.

Have a chocolate.

pass-along plants

It's daylily season.
Hemerocallis; daylilies multiply fast and easy to transplant,
which make them one of the best "pass-along plants".
In fact, mine all came from friends' garden.

'Prairie Blue Eyes'

Saturday morning was calm and cloudy, yet, a waterlily was open and I was able to take a photo.
Finally!

much needed rain. Hooray!

Independence day 2012

Hardiness & Valor

Purity & Innocence

 Vigilance & Perseverance and Justice

Happy Independence Day!

planted by birds

I did not plant these.
It must be the birds...or the wind?

Potentilla ?

Common Sunflower ?

?

Should I pull them out?
Can I?
Maybe, maybe not...

When I weed, they are mixture of "true weeds" and "volunteer seedlings" from my plants.
I would say it's 50:50.
I try to deadhead most prolific re-seeders to minimize weeding, but some volunteers are so delightful.
It's a delicate balance between too much and not enough.

I don't have a clue what the bottom pink flower is -some kind of sage?
The leaves show hail damages, but it's healthy and growing well.
It's about 2.5' tall. Do you know what it is?
