Collectibles

My husband came home with nice rainbow trout this weekend, so we opened a white wine we'd received from my cousin for Christmas to go with the fish.
We don't drink many white wines, but when we find a Chardonnay that we really like, it's worth mentioning.

The corkscrew on the label is one of Brother Timothy's over 1000 corkscrew collection.
I'd love to tour Napa Valley and visit the museum, have dinner at CIA (The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone), and taste wine of course!

Some people collect spoons when they travel.
I love any needlework so I collect thimbles.
Here are a few from my collection...

左上から;

From top left;
Old sterling silver, Germany, New Mexico,
Montreal Canada, England, Alamo Texas,
Netherlands, Barcelona Spain, Munich Germany.

I have 57 thimbles, and 57 fun memories.

Do you collect anything?

muted colors and jewel tones

Maybe the light reflects differently -?
Color looks different under our dry intense sun, from the moist and gentle Japanese air.

Pastels look so lovely in English and Japanese gardens.
I have talked about how the pastels look washed out in my Colorado garden before.
I can say a similar thing about our clothing.
A garment can look perfectly fine in Colorado. Yet looks too brassy to wear in Japan.
(I have to say that I am more conscientious about acting "appropriately" in Japan, too.  wink, wink )

Anyway, it is a concern of mine when I knit for someone in Japan.

Well, I have chosen both a muted color shawl and a jewel tone cowl this time- just to be safe.

I hope it's not too drab.
I hope it's not too bright.

Muted colors and jewel tones. Which color do you like?

seed catalogs

I haven't been patronizing independent seed companies for a while.
I still have received a few seed catalogs this year.

This company specializes in Asian vegetable seeds.
They even have some recipes in the catalog.

It is strange (to me) to see Japanese recipes in English...
Recipes (somewhat simplified) are here, if you are interested.

I'm definitely ordering SHISHITO !

edible garden

Oct. 2012

I didn't have a chance to talk about it last October,
but I was busy slicing three large red cabbage heads one day before I left for Japan.
I could not imagine my husband cooking red cabbages for himself (or for anyone).
I made a few batches of "Braised red cabbages with apples" in a hurry and froze them.

I looked back my files and saw how I did in the edible garden last year.

  • I lost cucumbers and zucchinis.
  • Many fruits were bruised, but still edible.
  • The radishes just didn't want to grow.  Radishes?!
  • The peppers grew better with wind protections.
  • I found out that I CAN grow melons!
  • All in all not bad for having two major hail storms.

I would like to try new vegetables and expand my edibles this year.
My kitchen garden reminds me not to harm the land with chemicals, especially when I harvest them.

a word

Simplify.

Not really a resolution, just a word to remember throughout the year.

I'd like to simplify my relationships, words, house, and even my cooking.
I cleaned the credenza today, and will start from here.
