if I had a daughter

If I had a daughter
I would make a wedding shawl.

When a grandchild is born
I would wrap the baby in the shawl.

Be brave.
Be curious.
Fly like a bird.

This is for you.

Ravelry details here.

Two more amaryllises are in bloom.
I can smell their faint but sweet fragrance in early mornings.

I have made a birthday card for my mother-in-law using the red amaryllis photo -as promised. ^^

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Making promises on blog?  It seems to be working!

soil or snow

It snowed, and it was a blessing.  It had been way too dry.

           Feb. 17                                                                                        Feb. 21

Mr. shoveled the driveway before he went to work - thank you!- I worked on the side of the house.
Since the sidewalk was warm, snow melted nicely as soon as most of them were removed.
I'm sure that the drivers were happy about it.

Shoveling snow used to hurt my back, then, it occurred to me..."This is same as digging soil!"
I had watched "How to use a shovel safely" video a few years ago, and I applied what I had learned on that video to snow shoveling.
Always dump it to my left since I'm right-handed, bend my knees not may back, etc.

No more back pain!
I don't know why I had this mental block just because it was snow instead of soil.
I don't mind shoveling snow now, it almost became fun - almost!

Sunday evenings

Downton Abbey, season 3 is over -here in the U.S.

What are we going to do on Sunday evenings?!
I'm going to miss your wits, Lady Violet Crawley!!!

vegetable news from Arizona

I've received a gardening news mail from a friend in Arizona.

She lives in Colorado April to October, and November to March in Arizona.

She said:

"Look at these giant Cauliflower and Daikon radish!
I always think of you when I eat Daikon"

She also said that this time of the year it is hard to eat as fast as it is coming in.
I am green with envy!

Thank you for thinking of me, J!

amaryllis therapy

A Christmas gift from my mother-in-law, a red amaryllis bulb is blooming cheerfully on our breakfast table
I'd like to make a birthday card using these photographs for mother next month.
I think she'll like it.

Other long time resident amaryllises who woke up from a long nap in the basement are about to bloom as well.

It's a long way until spring, and the amaryllis therapy will have to do for now.

And...we all eagerly wait for spring...

hockey game

We went to watch a NHL hockey game this weekend.

When I was three or four years old, my uncle played hockey for his university.
I think hockey players were very rare in Japan back then.
My Mom took me to watch their practices every once in a while.

After the practice, he would put me on the ice, held me tight and skated fast around the rink pushing me from behind.

I closed my eyes and I was flying like a bird in my red shiny enamel shoes.

My treasured memory.

I love ice hockey... and remembering that moment.

Good pretzel and beer, our team's victory -it was a great weekend.

pas·tra·mi

I used to have a hard time ordering the pastrami at our local Deli.
They couldn't understand what I was ordering and I had to say it five or six times.
I became more nervous to say it and it got worse.
I asked my husband what was wrong with my pronunciation, but he couldn't think of anything.
We often have problems with "R", but that wasn't it...

I was avoiding pastrami for a while but really wanted to have it for lunch.
I looked up the online dictionary and clicked on the speaker icon.
I realized that I was saying pas-to-rami instead of  pas·tra·mi.

Today, I only had to say it once. (^^)v

I like to have pastrami in my Pho.
Place Pho base powder, cooked rice noodle, meat, some leafy vegetables (I had spinach) in a bowl.
Pour hot water.
Add drop of Hoisin sauce and splash of Sriracha sauce.
Mix and enjoy!

I wish I had some beansprouts, but it was still very satisfying.   It's been a long time!

One of many "immigrant moment" episode.
Have a nice weekend!
