pond

My water lilies bloomed non-stop all summer this year.

There were more dragonflies, too.

A red fish showed up in August -there was no fish to be seen since May!
He has grown a lot.

He is the sole survivor from a blue heron attack.
We'd talked about giving up on keeping any fish in our pond.

The air is finally cool now.  I've decided to add more fish tomorrow.

I think he'll like that.

baker's dozen peaches

Palisade, Colorado Peaches

Baker's dozen is 13.
Because I always thought it was such a generous gesture to add one extra to make a customer happy,
I never knew its origin was to compensate some cheating.
So much has changed since the 13th century, and it's practiced as a "generous (and delightful) gesture" nowadays especially among small businesses.
An event enticed me to look up these words this labor day weekend.

You may not think of Colorado as a peach producing state, but it is.
We see farm stands popping up along  the roadsides this time of year.
They are from the Western slope orchards where the climate is much milder than the Eastern slope.
Because good fruits are hard to come by in Colorado, these peaches are much appreciated by those of us who live on the Eastern slope when the growers drive over the mountains and bring them to us.

When I tried to purchase a basket with a dozen peaches from a small stand, a humble young man with big rough hands quietly added one extra peach.

I said "Thank you," and he shyly smiled.

This weekend we worked hard to wash and wax Daisy (our camper). It was quite a job to cover all the surfaces.
What a treat it was to have the super sweet and juicy peaches afterwords.
These thirteen peaches set the tone for our weekend and made it wonderful.

"I will put more effort in supporting the Colorado farmers."  I renewed my thought.
