late summer bloom

Pitcher's Blue Sage  Salvia azurea (or pitcheri) 'grandiflora'
Hummingbird

This sage was more delicate blue than I initially thought, baby blue-ish?
It's been windy as usual and hard to photograph, not to mention I don't know what I'm doing.

My plants are on their own for the most part (except for the vines),
but I do stake this tall lanky beauty; I tend to spoil blue plants.

~ ~ ~
Heron's Bill  Erodium carvifolium
It blooms non-stop, also a gift from a friend.
Looks interesting close-up.

Veronica

This elegant veronica with white edged leaves is blooming again.
The bottom photo was taken in July.
I lost her name and there is no information on-line.
Does anyone know who she is?

red fruits

Plants with berries keep me entertained.

Golden Elder, Sambucus canadensis ‘Aurea’
Lovely color, birds seem to enjoy them.

Red-leaved Rose, Rosa glauca
It seems that I missed her shy spring blooms.

Gooseberry, Ribes hirtellum
First fruits, tasted like a cross between grape and tomato.

Sweet Briar Rose, Rosa eglanteria
Apple scented rose. The hips turn bright red and persist throughout the winter. Wicked thorn.
It was a favorite of Shakespeare.

lawn

Hearing the weekend ritual of lawn mowing still feels foreign to me.
I knew very few homes with lawns when I was growing up in Japan.

Our lawn is about 1/5 ~1/6 of our neighbors.
You can see here with a red pin on our house.

It's an endless battle to keep the lawn lush and green in this semi-dessert climate:
water, feed, spray, aerate and more water.

Especially if you choose to go organic even with our relatively small lawn,
it's a pain in the grass. (sorry!)

There is a movement for reducing or replacing unnecessary lawns,
but the old traditions are hard to break, aren't they?

Many people use lawn care services but I know that
the foreign sound will be in the air all-day tomorrow.

I mow our grass during the week and people look at me curiously
when they see a woman behind the mower.
I wonder if they think I'm weird.

white cosmos

Our beloved dog liked sniffing white cosmos.
She was a lost soul as soon as our son left home.
She acted as though her job was done.

 This is for you Spirit.

the plan

This was my big plan when we moved here in 2005
and only had a pile of compost and flagstones in the back.
There wasn't even a single weed in sight.

The pasted white paper on the left side under the potager
is where I wanted a cute little garden shed.
But the HOA (homeowners association) said "no shed".

Someone suggested that we should submit it as a garden house instead of a shed,
but I gave up on the idea and settled with a pergola.
I mean, pergola is okay but what's wrong with the garden shed!?
And
Why can't I compost?
Why can't I hang laundry outside?

The land of free can be a land of peculiar.

Oh, yes, I was talking about the plan
A few corrections are in order...

stone bench

Russian Sage Perovskia atriplicifolia  'Little Spire'
and a rock garden berm

You will see a stone bench when you walk from our driveway to the front door.

I was offered to take this thick, big flagstone for free
when a stone dealer was relocating.
I'd called my son and his friend within a second.
They moved it in and out of the car and to the back yard
risking smashing their fingers more than I'd like to admit.

It was a lot of lifting and adjusting when I found the perfect legs for it.

Then, we decided to sell the house.
A good friend kept it for us when we had to stay in the apartment for three months.

Husband and the friend carried it huffing and puffing and finally
the bench ended its journey here.

I love this stone bench but my guys are not so fond of it.

Saturday morning

It's been a long time since I wasn't alone on Saturday morning.
Husband made blueberry pancake brunch.
It was blog worthily good.
um...was I shaking?

Thank you Honey.

knit for Japan

Ravelry
 Ravelry

Just a quick post about " knit for Japan KAL" on Ravelry.
Northeastern Japan will be mercilessly cold and snowy soon.
College students in Japan have pledged to hand deliver donated items
to the quake and tsunami victims in those area.
(until end of this year, then they may have to mail)

There are many organizations trying to help and they are all appreciated but
I'm hoping that it will warm their heart and soul when they receive something handmade.

full circle

Our patio and lawn in the back are circles.
We had considered building a deck, but I wanted something plant-able.
Five years later, the thyme has happily spread between the flagstones and
lend a nice scent with every step.

Sept. 2005

June 2006

It was finally done nine months after we'd moved in.
The patio required tons of blocks, flagstones and dirt
since we made it fairly generous in size.
We had a family reunion a few years ago
and all 12 of us were able to sit comfortably around the chimenea.
"The greater also serves for the lesser" worked here.

I've come to realize that there are so many round objects in our home.
Garden design ideas come from unexpected places.

I have since removed a few flagstones on one edge and
made more planting space; always need more planting space...

books

A book that I'd requested came in.
I have managed to leave the library with only six books.

The very top book is
Gardening for a Lifetime: How to Garden Wiser as You Grow Older by Sydney Eddison
I am most interested in this one.

~ ~ ~

Chrysanthemum x rubellum 'Clara Curtis'

Garlic chives Allium tuberosum

Aster frikartii 'Mönch'

Garlic chives

The garden is settling down with old favorites.
I love white blooms even with the garlic scent.

envelope

US stamps- Eastern red cedar and Ponderosa pine
artwork by late Ned Shidler

A letter to my mother. The postage now is 98 cents from US to Japan.
I love the Pinecone forever stamps.
I hope they will always have nice botanical series like these.

~ ~ ~

It's the seed collecting season, isn't it?
Since seeds are living things, I collect them in paper envelope
and try to let them breathe。

Here is a handy way to make a seed envelope without glue or tape.

Fold a rectangle paper like this

Fold over the longer part like this

Flip, eyeball the center and fold the both sides like this
The top folds don't have to meet, but will make it securer if they do.

Fold the wings and tuck in like this

Now, you have a seed envelope! Hope it wasn't too confusing.

I find this extremely handy when you are out and about
and stays very secure too.

garden log : did the center bed makeover, found gooseberries!

vegetable

Not a big yield yet, but it's a start.
The orange cherry tomatoes are 'Sun Gold'; sweet as a candy.
The cucumber had a 'Japanese cucumber' tag; the burpless type.
Always good with Yuzu-pon.

caryopteris x clandonensis 'worcester gold' & a busy bumblebee

On the north side path, golden leaf blue mist spiraea started to open.
It's so bright, looks like a spotlight is shining there.

I really should name the path something memorable.
I did have an idea in my mind when I started it...

garden log : started to widen the path and added more planting area by the north gate

hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla 'endless summer' @ M's garden

I took my surplus irises to my neighbor friend and
she gave me cuttings from her blooming hydrangea 'Endless Summer'.

surplus irises

This is the only macrophylla cultivar (that I know of )
that we can grow in our climate.
It blooms on new wood and because of our super alkaline soil,
her blooms will always be pinkish color.

I can only grow her in shade...

I shall have some tea and make a plan.

Oh, right. They haven't even rooted yet...

chit chat

Sunset hyssop Agastache rupestris

Sunset Hyssop has finally opened.
She is a Hummingbird favorite.

~ ~ ~

It was a sizzling day, 91°F / 32.78°C high.
Good day to go to COSTCO and pick up a few things.

Did you know if you separate bananas, they keep longer?
I must be the last housewife to find out about this.

Did you know that you should keep the pineapple up-side-down
to even out the sweetness?
I know that I'm not the last one to know about this trick!

garden log : dug up TB irises and spreading daylily, picked a few more strawberries

sun & water

Blanket flower Gaillardia aristata & Flax  Linum usitatissimum

This flower reminds me of Colorado sun.

When I looked at my iced water glass, there was condensation on it!
The humidity must be high.  It is a rare occurrence in this dry climate.

The temperature is down a bit but the sun is still searing and plants get scorched.
No matter how much you try to conserve, gardening in Colorado requires lots of water.
The basic irrigation is done automatically thanks to 6zoned sprinkler
and drip system that we carefully planned.

Gardening doesn't always work out the way you planned, does it?

My side yard here is filled with native plants, all started from seeds.
It's a long and narrow difficult area but good enough for the dog to do his thing.

A lot of yellow here but I was happy how great they grew and thought it had its own charm.
Well, the neighbor moved out, sprinkler stopped, run-off water stopped coming.
Above photos are from last year, I have maybe 1/10th of plants this year.
It's a sad sight. I should water them more often but I'm having a hard time adjusting.

Will someone please buy the house already?
It's a nice place, really.
