le creuset

This was the epitome of impulse buying...

It was time for our dog's comprehensive health exam which is included in his health plan.
When he is healthy, I'm normally asked to dropped him off, and the vet would call me when everything is done.
I though I'd save gas and go "window-shopping" in the area after I dropped him off -a big mistake.

The outlet-mall had many nice new stores.
Oh yes, Christmas isn't too far, is it?
But I've never expected "le creuset" store popping up here.
Don't you want every piece in every color when you see them?!

It can be used for soup, roast, or even stir-fry!

It was supposed to be two to three hours, but they ended up calling me after 6 hours.
I had such a long time to kill so I had to pick this up too (from a different store).

The good news is that he is all healthy.
I think I'll wait at home next time.

September aspects

Crataegus crus-galli   Cocksper Hawthorn

Look at these fruits on our thorn-less hawthorn!
The hawthorn in the back is fruit-less this year.
Isn't it funny how they take turns?

Euonymus atropurpurea  Eastern Wahoo/Spindle Tree

This eastern native wahoo or spindle tree came from Ohio.
The leaves get lime-ish every year -I think our soil may be too alkaline.

Prunus besseyi  Western Sandcherry & Sedum

This sandcherry (in front) is a western native.
I enjoy seeing the brilliant red leaves every fall.
Its black fruits seem to be very popular amongst birds -they disappear fast.

Ampelopsis brevipedunculata  Variegated porcelain berry vine

Oh, how I wish I could make a necklace using these splendid berries!
Hmmm, the variegation seems to be disappearing from this porcelain vine...

in my mind

It's not perfect...

Three of us made the path and we had fun.
I don't want to change it.

This path is mainly used by delivery person since most visitors would come from the driveway side.
It is a short cut...better than nothing, I suppose.

The skinny flower bed.  I was going to plant different annuals every year.
I got lazy and let the self sawing cosmos took over it.
It felt good to pull them all out.
I will plant different annuals next year.
I may actually do it since I'm writing it down here.

The metal edging creeps up all the time, and why is it still shiny and not rusted?
I don't even want to use edging, and expand the planting to the stepping stones,
but it's on a sloop and rain might wash out the soil...rain will wash out the soil.

I want to pull out the sickly juniper, remove the gravel and make more bed.
Does it have to be terraced ?

Were all these verbena bonariensis too much?
Why do I always want to say verbena Buenos Aires?

Like I said...it's not perfect...

plume time

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus'

It is grass plume time.
Aren't they beautiful swaying in the wind sparkling?
This zebra grass grew big enough to cast a nice shadow
where I can sit on the lawn and pet my dog in-between my gardening.
In September, a gardener can let her guard down and relax a little. ^ ^

It's kind of fun to see the garden from this sitting position.

Saccharum ravennae

Saccharum ravennae is a hardy pampas grass.
Although it isn't the real pampas grass (not hardy here),
this impressive grass still grows over ten feet tall.
Can you see a tall grass behind the dark-bronze ninebark 'Diablo'?

Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'

'Karl Foerster' feather reed grass is growing with a wonderful posture as always.
It is the most popular grass around here.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’

From my homeland, Japanese forest grass survived this year's heat. Great job!

I though I might have lost this small variegated grass (no-name, it was a gift)
I can't remember if it has ever plumed -?

With a long blooming heron's bill (Erodium manescavii) and a spurge (Euphorbia dulcis 'Chameleon').

The north path where this small grass resides,
become lively with many plants again since I've cleared the too rambunctious vinca.

They were all being choked... sorry.

I'm aiming for an interesting texture with different foliage even without the colorful blooms.
With their movement and form, the grasses play very important role in my garden.

about my roses

" The Mayflower "

As I said before, this is not a kind climate for roses.
The sun, wind, temperature and lack of water -everything is so harsh.
I'm surprised that this David Austin Rose is still alive after six hard seasons.

But after seeing many garden photographs with beautiful roses,
I couldn't resist the temptations this year.

Aside from winter hardiness, I looked for roses that meet these criteria:
  •  has own root
  •  requires no winter protections (besides covering with a little extra compost )
  •  requires no spraying
  •  resistant to black spots
  •  resistant to powdery mildew
  •  more than one season interest is nice.

I have welcomed these five tough beauties this season.

  Darlow's Enigma
   Morden Snowbeauty
   Thérése Bugnet
   Carfree Delight
   Night Owl

I chose no English Rose nor soft pastel color.
As much as I adore them I have to be realistic,
and use the roses with some chance to do and look well in my climate.
It appears...that I like singles more than I thought.

I sincerely hope to see them perform well next season.

whirling butterfly

Gaura lindheimeri

I love gaura.
Unfortunately it hasn't been hardy for me. I find it listed as zone 6, sometimes 5.
I started from seed this year thinking (very optimistically) "born here = better chance of survival".

Mine is still very small and only has about seven flowers,
but I think it's breathtakingly beautiful when a large plant is in full bloom.

Its common name is "whirling butterfly".
Even the name is beautiful.

discovery and hope

Clematis integrifolia

She re-bloomed with a force after a drastic pruning to remove the hail damage.

A hope for a better season -one of the many discoveries in the garden.

shadows in the garden  7AM

But most of all I'm discovering "a tiny bit stronger me" as I garden in a challenging climate.

I looked at the end of summer shadows and said to myself "Next season will be a great season".

Ratatouille

Ratatouille by Disney / Pixar Animation Studios

It was 2007.
We loved the move.
I hope you did too.

I have to make "Remy's Ratatouille" when fresh tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and herbs are plentiful.
I can't make it as pretty as Remy, but it's always delicious -hot or cold.
Bon appétit!

* Used less oil and baked in 350F oven until done (didn't want to bake for 2 hrs!)

hummingbird

I met hummingbirds here in US.
I never get tired of watching them hover around the garden.

Perching at our feeder.
Looks like she is a girl.

They will be migrating south soon,
flying unbelievable distance for such small birds.

Thank you for visiting.
Eat well and have a safe trip.
     See you again next year.

Agastache rupestris   Sunset Hyssop
Their favorite flower

It's already Labor day tomorrow.
