この、愛らしい名前の意味を知って以来　もっと好きになった小さな水仙

  tête-à-tête :  頭と頭→ 顔と顔→ 内緒話

I can't speak French, but was charmed by the little daffodil's name and its meaning.

  tête-à-tête : head-to-head→ face-to-face→ private conversation.

I often struggle to translate, especially in this format - in writing.

Years ago, I was asked to translate a software manual and was surprised how much easier it was to work on it because there was no feelings involved.

It's unlikely to find a perfect word or phrase on every word and I have learned to be quite flexible/adaptable.

It became easier when I stop trying so hard for perfection.

Little-K moved to the house next door when she was two years old.

We would talk over the fence and she would pet our dog, ask questions about plants - we were friends.

と 、母が紹介してくれました

繊細な子です

When I was a child,

My mom would introduce me to adults by saying

"She is sunao".   (su-na-o)

I couldn't find an accurate English word for it, but it means honest, dutiful, and straightforward

-all three words combined.

Mom didn't say,
She is sensitive, wimpy or timid.

Just
"She is sunao."

It was nice.

on the ice

生まれて初めて氷釣りに行きました

やっぱり、ペンギンみたいに歩いてしまった・・・

I went ice fishing for the first time.

I had to walk like a penguin even though I had spikes attached to my boots.

氷の厚さは50cm程あって安全だったのですが

あちこちからババーン、ドカーンと氷の亀裂する大きな音が して　少し怖かったです　
特に，真下からした時は ぞく～っ！

The ice was about 20" thick.  

We were safe, but it was so spooky to hear the loud ice cracking noises all around or underneath me!

この時期に釣るお魚は、身がしまっていてとても美味しいのです  

Only the bottom trout was the keeper (caught by the husband).  Maybe a rainbow x cutthroat -?

Fish are so tasty this time of year.

まるでだるまさんみたいに丸々して行ったけれど

やっぱり、・・・寒かった～！

I went with many layers of clothing, down jacket and hand warmers 

-looking like a Humpty Dumpty, it still was C*O*L*D!

Doll Festival

三日は　ひな祭りですね

英訳は Doll Festival  又は Girl's Day

なんだか、しっくりきませんね　（しっくりしません、だったかな？）

木目込み人形のお雛様はわたしの日本発がはっきりした時

母がくれたものです

March 3 is Japanese Girl's Day or Doll Festival.  

My mother gave these dolls to me when she found out about my leaving Japan.

子供のころ

ひな壇の下のほうに飾ってあった

'おままごとセット' で思いっきり遊びたかったのを覚えています

We had a traditional tiered doll display when I was a child,

and I have so many fun memories associated with it.

こちらの人は

皇族の話になるとどうしても上辺だけしか理解できてないような気がします

そういう歴史がないので　当前のことですよね

I think it's very difficult for most Americans to understand the complicated feelings we have toward royalties.

No history with them, no feelings for them (for the most part).

甘酒は手に入らないので

にごり酒でお祝いしましょう

I couldn't find the traditional sweet sake, 

but was lucky to find a close cousin, cloudy sake or "Nigori za(sa)ke" to celebrate my history.
