土曜日はどんより曇り空でガーデニング日和

残念ながら10年間頑張ってくれたプラムの木にさようならを言いました

これはビルダーが植えてくれた木だったのですが 最初から不健康で

年々具合が悪化してしまい、害虫は弱い木を知っているんですね

昨年アタックされて 今春 芽吹きませんでした

予想はしていたものの、やはり悲しい

Saturday was a nice overcast day -good gardening-day.

We said goodbye to our 10 yr old plum tree.

This builder provided tree was in poor health from the beginning, and its condition declined slowly every year.  The ever advantageous insects took a hold of this weak tree last year, 
and the normally early budding tree did not bud this spring.
This wasn't unexpected. Sad nevertheless.


切ってくれた夫にどうするか検討するからとりあえず株を残しておいて、
と頼んだのですが、さて…
もうちょっと短くし、ソーサーを置いてバードバス？　う～ん…

ゆっくり考えよう

I have asked my husband to leave the stump until I figure out what I want to do with it.

Maybe cut a little sorter, level it, put a saucer on to make a bird bath?   Then, maybe not.

No rush to decide.

バックグラウンドに小さく見えますが

北向きのロックガーデンも日陰好きのプランツが芽吹いてきました

ドワーフのヒューケラや庭石菖など

咲いてくれるのが楽しみです

As you can see in the background, the north facing rock garden is filling in with small shade loving plants - dwarf coral bells, blue eyed grass and such.
I can't wait for them to bloom soon.

木々が大きく育ってきたので（できるだけドワーフ系を選んだのですが）
こちらの小路を確保する為の剪定には一苦労します

Some trees and conifers are getting too big for the place (although I've chosen dwarf varieties in most cases), particularly for the small paths, that I have to prune them rather creatively.

できるだけコンパクトでいてくれるように松の新芽を摘み取りました
これを「みどりつみ」又は「摘心」と呼ぶらしいですがその違いがよくわかりません

英語では松の新芽を「キャンドル」と呼び、これを摘むことを「キャンドリング」と言います

This dwarf pine was showing new shoots, so I candled them to control its size.

Candling is pinching off those new, thick shoots that appear at the terminal ends call "candles".

東向き、フロントのロックガーデンも日々大きく変化しています

 In front, east facing rock garden too, is changing everyday.

ロックガーデンが煌くのは五月、もうすぐです

Rock garden shines in May.

I'm excited for them to dazzle me.
