orange talk みかんの話

大きなプロジェクトをスタートして　一息ついたら　と思っていたら

随分時間がかかってしまいました

Hi!

I was going to get back to you when I got to a good place to break after I started a project.

Well, I thought I'll never get there.

But, first, an orange talk.

このみかんが並んだ写真、今年早春に撮ったものです

そのままになっていたのでこの機会にちょっと書きますね

みかんは時計回りに

ネーブル・オレンジ、すもう・オレンジ、ミネオラ・オレンジ、そしてマンダリン・オレンジです

普通のオレンジは何処にでも売っていますが、
子供の頃日本でたくさん食べていたみかんのような美味しいものが
なかなか手に入らないので　ちょっとお勉強してみました

I took this picture early spring, and never had a chance to talk about it.
It seems the right topic, so, why not?

They are navel orange, Sumo orange, Minneola orange and Mandarin orange. (clockwise)
In japan, people eat tons of oranges when in season, but mostly mandarin variety.
I'm having a hard time finding good snacking oranges like the ones I've enjoyed growing up.
Sure, there are Cuties, Halos, etc.
Problem is that they are -well, okay, but not great.

So, I looked up.

このすもう・オレンジは、日本でいうデコポンです
お相撲さんみたいに見えるのかな・・・　（笑

Sumo orange was hybridized in Japan.
It's easy to eat, sweet and keeps well. 
Why this one is called Sumo in America is another discussion.

ミネオラ・オレンジはタンジェロとグレープフルーツの交雑種だそうです
それも美味しいけれどやはり普通のみかんが欲しくなります

The Minneola orange is a cross between tangerine and grapefruit.
It's very good if you want a cross between tangerine and grapefruit...

最近人気が出てきたタンジェロ（タンジェリン）はみかんのように皮が柔らかくて
食べやすいのですが味は当たりハズレが大きくて
色々試してみた結果、マンダリンの表示のあるものが日本のみかんに一番近いと思います

たま～に、Satsuma,薩摩みかんが手に入ります
その時は持って帰れるだけ買います

I've learned to seek out the word "Mandarin" in store display and stickers, and so far so good. 
Although the word is misused often. :o( 
If you see "Satsuma Mandarin", just get as many as you can carry.


As for painting orange peel...

みかんの皮を塗るのが大変なのは…

うちの壁のテクスチャーがオレンジ・ピールというものなんです

ペンキを塗っても塗ってもなかなか穴が埋まらない…

Our wall texture is called "orange peel", and it is a pain in the neck to paint.

You paint and paint and still don't fill in all the nooks and crannies.

はじめにW または M を塗ってそのペンキをのばします ^ ^

我家は天井が高く　10フィート（約3ｍ）もあるので

下記のピンクライン部分を塗るのに5.5ガロン(21.8 L) 必要でした

I start out painting W or M and spread out the paint as they tell you to.

Our ceiling is 10 feet high.  It's taking 5.5 gallons of paint so far to paint the pink lines below.

さあ、次はダイニングとリビングルームです
　ペンキ塗りを始めた理論的なわけがあるのですが

また一息ついたら説明しますね
