roly-poly

Although we are getting hailstorms daily, they have been small and brief -my garden is bursting with colors.

gypsophila 'Viette's Dwarf',  aster alpinus
iris germanica,   cerastium tomentosum,   penstemon mensarum

Some say the roly-polies (Armadillidiidae) only eat decaying matter and doesn't harm plants.
Well, not exactly.

I  went out to deadhead the ajugas by our front porch and found four plants half-dead.
Roly-polies are eating my ajugas.  Grrr!

Because of our cold winter and hot dry summer, damages from insects and plant disease are minimal in Colorado gardens. In Fact, I've never seen the dreaded powdery mildew on my monardas (aka mildew magnet) in my current garden.
But, our spring can be relatively wet with daily dose of  thunderstorms, and moisture loving rolly-pollies seem to cause a lot of damage this time of the year.

I have used Diatomaceous earth last year for the first time on my then also half-dead roly-poly damaged plants and had a delightful results.  I was impressed.

Under a microscope, it looks like shards of glass and DE punctures the body of any beetle-type insect that has a carapace, which then dehydrates and the insect dies. Thankfully it works on crustaceans like roly-polies as well.
You can put it in an old sock (or pantyhose) and shake, if you don't have a duster.
It is totally nontoxic, infact it is already in our food!

I think DE will save my ajuga, and I know it will be a staple on my gardening shelf.
Do you use it in your garden?

Back to more pleasant photos from the garden.

geranium cinereum ’Ballerina’,   iris germanica
clematis integrifolia,   primula vialii

Who are you?    saponaria ocymoides
penstemon alamosensis,  camassia quamash 'Blue melody',  physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo'

  2. Chiko

    Diatomaceous earth

    1. hana

  3. Such beautiful blooms! Too bad you can't spread something on your garden to protect it from hail damage. . .

Yes, what I need is a clear retractable roof. :)
