電子メールやインスタント・メッセージでコミュニケーションするようになった今日この頃

時に、送り主の手が触れた本物の郵便が届くと心がスキップします

We tend to get things done with convenient emails and instant massages nowadays.
Still, my heartbeat skips when I receive real mail that the sender has actually touched.

二月からのU.S.メールの郵便料金吊上のニュースを耳にして、これは大変、と
大急ぎで小包をパックしました

With the news of another postage increase in February, I quickly packed a small box.

先日手に入れた　スーツケースを下げて重さを量る小さな秤で小包を量ってみました
航空会社の荷物制限がどんどん厳しくなってきているので購入したのですが　お～これは便利！(ビニール袋に入れて量りました)

I bought a micro scale to weigh ever shrinking allowed baggage for traveling; the kind you hook whatever you want to weigh. This was so handy to weigh a package. (I put it in a plastic bag to weigh)

海を渡る小包は税関申告書を書き込むのがちょっと大変で　重さやサイズ、
そして価値によって使うフォームが異なります
明細に書き込まなくてはいけないのでプレゼントする側としてはサプライズ感がなくなってしまうのが悲しいところです
民間企業に比べてずっとお安いU.S.メール、需要減少で営業困難のようですが
今のところなんとか運営してくれているのはとても有難いことです

Filling out a customs form for international mail can be complicated; the necessary form changes depending on weight, size and value.
Even though I'm usually sending gifts, I still need to list everything, and unfortunately this takes the "Surprise!" aspect out of  "the gift".
But I'm thankful that despite all the difficulties they are having, U.S. Mail is still available and affordable.

嬉しいことがありました
美味しい 新鮮なあの "梨" を近所のスーパーで見つけたのです (東洋系のスーパーではなくて）
おまけに1個1ドルだなんて・・・こちらでこんなに安く手に入れることができたのは初めてです

I found something delightful at our neighborhood supermarket (not an Asian market).
The Asian pears.
Not only were they very fresh and delicious, they were $1 a piece!　I've never seen them this cheep.

この日本でお馴染みの梨はずっとアジアン・ペアーと呼ばれていましたが
新しい名前をもらったようですよ
「アップル・ペアー」　カリフォルニア育ちだからでしょうか？
雪が早く降って秋が素通りしてしまったような気がしていましたが、これで少し落ち着きました　
シャキ、シャキ、シャキ　あ～、秋！

We have been calling them "Asian pears" as long as I can remember.
Well, it has a new name.  "Apple pear" -probably because she is a California girl, not an import from Asia.
I was feeling like fall has skipped us when we had the first snow so early, but I felt so much better after I had a big bite of crisp fall.   yummm...



それから、これは6月に開始されたのですが
コロラドから日本直行便のフライトが実現しました
デンバーから成田まで10時間52分です

日本がちょっぴり近くなりましたよ、お母さん

The Denver-Tokyo direct flight has become a reality (started in June).
It takes 10 hours and 52 minutes to fly between two cities. 

It is getting closer, Mom.

週末、夫がニジマスを釣ってきてくれたので　クリスマスにいとこから送ってきた白ワインを開けました
我が家は赤ワインばかりで白は殆ど飲まないのですが 
たまに美味しいシャドネーをみつけたら記録しておきたくなります

My husband came home with nice rainbow trout this weekend, so we opened a white wine we'd received from my cousin for Christmas to go with the fish.
We don't drink many white wines, but when we find a Chardonnay that we really like, it's worth mentioning.

近いうちにNapa Valleyを訪ね　その博物館、それからシェフ達の学校のレストランで食事、
そしてもちろんワイン・テイスティングと、楽しみたいです

The corkscrew on the label is one of Brother Timothy's over 1000 corkscrew collection.
I'd love to tour Napa Valley and visit the museum, have dinner at CIA (The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone), and taste wine of course!

ここ数年、種はオーダーしていなかったのですが、
シード･カタログがいくつか届きました

I haven't been patronizing independent seed companies for a while.
I still have received a few seed catalogs this year.

こちらはアジアン･シード専門カタログです
手に入りにくい種だけではなく　レシピも数種掲載されています

This company specializes in Asian vegetable seeds. 
They even have some recipes in the catalog.

とても簡易化されていて、ちょっとおもしろいです

It is strange (to me) to see Japanese recipes in English...

なにも異常のない場合は　おあずけして、全てが終わったら獣医さんから連絡があるので
迎えに行くのですが
ガソリン代を節約しようと　ピック･アップの連絡がくるまで付近でウィンドウ･ショッピングでも、
と思ったのでした、が、甘かった
It was time for our dog's comprehensive health exam which is included in his health plan.
When he is healthy, I'm normally asked to dropped him off, and the vet would call me when everything is done.
I though I'd save gas and go "window-shopping" in the area after I dropped him off -a big mistake. 

アウトレット・モールにはたくさん新しいお店がオープンしていました
そっか～、クリスマスもそんなに先じゃないですね～
でも、ル・クルーゼ  の専門店がここに来るとは･･・見るとみんな欲しくなって困るんですけど
The outlet-mall had many nice new stores.
Oh yes, Christmas isn't too far, is it? 
But I've never expected "le creuset" store popping up here. 
Don't you want every piece in every color when you see them?!

   

これは煮物、ロースト、その上炒め物にも使えそうですよ
相変わらず、派手色ですね・・・（汗、　　超バーゲンはこのチェリー、黄色、ライム色だけでした
でもね、北国の長い冬（うちの場合は高国ですが）こんな明るい色を見るとホントに気が晴れるのですよ、
北欧の鮮やかな色使いが良い例ですね

２～３時間のはずが　結局６時間後に連絡をいただき
あまりにも待ち時間が長かったので　違うお店でこれも買ってしまった～　
It was supposed to be two to three hours, but they ended up calling me after 6 hours.
I had such a long time to kill so I had to pick this up too (from a different store).

そうそう、ワン君はすこぶる健康とのことです　よかった・・
この次は家で待つようにしよう
The good news is that he is all healthy. 
I think I'll wait at home next time.

I found it!

サイドボードのような家具を探していたのですが

先日行った蚤の市でも 欲しかったサイズが見つからなかったので

家具屋さんの新しいものを見に行こうかな、と思っていた矢先でした

I wanted a sideboard-ish storage unit, and

I was about to visit a new furniture store after I had no luck at a flea market.

街には、アンティーク＋ヴィンテージ＋インテリア＋雑貨屋さんのようなお店がいくつかあります

（夫は＋がらくた屋とも言いますが・・・）

We have several antique/vintage/interior decoration/gift shops in town.

( my husband may add /junk)

そちらに最近、家具が増えてきました

若い人はＩＫＥＡっぽいデザインを好む傾向があるからでしょうか？

それとも、高齢者が断捨離要なのか？

They've started to carry more furniture lately.

Maybe because the young people seem to prefer IKEA-ish style -?  

Or, maybe more people are downsizing -?

【わたしの部屋】と呼んでいるゲストルームＮｏ.2 が

手芸のやりかけ、ガーデニングの本、ノートＰＣ等、散在しがちなので

能率的に収納できる家具が欲しかったのです

We call the guest bedroom No.2 "my room" because it tends to accumulate my ongoing staff like

kitting projects, gardening books, laptop and so on.

I needed a storage unit to house them effectively.

通常なら、装飾の少ないクリーンなデザインを好むわたしですが

「おばあちゃんの家具みたいだね」と夫に言われた時、ぴったりのが見つかったかな、と思いました

I normally like more clean design, but I knew I had what I wanted when my husband said

"It looks like Grandma's furniture".

そう、この部屋、おばあちゃんのキルトの似合う部屋にしたいのです

Yes, I'd like to make this room to go with our Grandma's quilt!

There was only one place selling it online (Amazon.com), and I am so glad that I was able to find it!

これは以前育てた経験がある　野草風の大好きな一年草です
日本ではありきたりの野草かもしれませんね

宿根草の多い庭ですが、こんなこぼれ種してくれる一年草も好きです

この子も毎年こぼれ種から帰って来てくれるといいな

I finally found the Corn Cockle seeds.  I bought pink and white (two different kinds).

Corn Cockle is a lovely reseeding annual that I used to have in my garden.

Although my garden is dominated by perennials, I love annuals that reseed themselves, and I'm hoping that she'll come back year after year.

昨日、隣町にある韓国系の大きなスーパーに行ってきました

 普通のお店ではなかなか手に入らない物だけお見せしますね
これと、薄切りお肉もこちらで購入。

Because we are an international couple, I'm often asked

 "What do you cook everyday?"

50% Western, 25% Japanese, 25% Chinese-ish, I think.

But I make some Mexican, Thai and Korean as well.

I went to a large Korean market in the next town yesterday.

These are some hard-to-get from the regular store items 
and I also buy paper-thin sliced meat from here.

反対側の隣町には中国系の大きなスーパー、

デンバーのダウンタウンには日本スーパーもあります

でも、円高なので日本系のお店でのお買い物はたま～にです
（どこで買っても日本商品はいい値段ですけど...)

新婚だった頃は１ドル２50円前後でしたが、今日見たら76円　
えっ！　ホント困っちゃう

We also have a large Chinese market not too far from home and a Japanese market in downtown Denver.

I rarely shop at the Japanese market because of today's exchange rate.

It was around $1 = ¥250 when we got married.

Today's rate is $1 = ¥76

　Ouch!

幸いなことに夫は海草と納豆以外だったら

ほとんど何でも食べてくれます。
彼はお寿司も好きですけど海苔が苦手なので巻物はダメなんですよ。
特別にお願いしてレタスで巻いていただいたこともあります手がかかるなぁ

文句は言われませんでしたが納豆を食べだすと、す～っと遠くに離れていたので

夫不在の時だけいただくようにしました

譲り合いが夫婦円満の秘訣です-？ ^^
(ちなみに３パックの納豆は３ドル４９セント、一粒、一粒大事に食べてます)

My husband can eat anything... except seaweed and natto.

He likes sushi but doesn't care for nori, so he doesn't eat anything rolled.

 He didn't complain when I ate natto in front of him, but tried to stay as far away as possible. 

 I now eat natto only when he isn't home.

I believe compromise is the secret to a successful marriage. ;o)

bombshell hydrangea

やっぱり、セダム 'オータム ジョイ' が気になって出かけると
セールの棚にある干からびた汚い枝の先になにやら...

So I went out to take another look at the sedum "Autumn Joy",

then I saw this dried up thing on the clearance shelf.

あっ、小さいけど素敵なお花が！
なんと Hydrangea Paniculata 'Bombshell' でした。
人目を気にしながら枝をひっかいてみると、青々です。
ちょっと名前がカンにさわりますが
Paniculata系は新しい枝に花が付くのを知っていたので
この子も連れて帰って来ました。

To my delight, it was a Hydrangea Paniculata 'Bombshell'.

I mean, I wasn't delighted with its condition (or the name for that matter), 

but it was a good price for a good size.

Hydrangea Paniculata blooms on new wood so I wasn't too concerned 

after I saw the wood looked still healthy despite the pathetic appearance.

(yes, I did the scratch test)

I am so excited to tryout this relatively new compact cultivar and
I do hope it'll come back strong next spring.
I also hope that I will be able to take better photographs by then.

ポットで暑いなかストレス気味なのでしょう、小さなお花。

The shy rose in the back is 'Golden Wings' on own root.
She can only carry a tiny flower under stress in the pot.

  黄色のバラはフレンドシップのシンボルだそうです。

この夏、素敵なお友達に出会えたことと
長いお付き合いの大切なお友達を祝って。
