Dahlia 'Mystic Wonder'

I was always hesitant to grow dahlia in Colorado.

Since they won't survive our winter, I would have to dig up every fall. 

Sounded like too much trouble to me.

Then, the ah ha moment.

I can grow it in a container and keep it in garage during the winter!

Totally not an original concept, but a good one nevertheless.

ある日、

あ、コンテナで育てれば、ガレージで越冬できる！

と、全くオリジナルではない発想

I was a little surprised by the reactions I received from Japanese friends on the yellow jacket sting.

The basic consensus was -I should have gone to the hospital.

Not surprisingly that's what all Japanese websites recommend you do.
While I do appreciate their concern, this reminded me of news I saw about a black widow spider sighting in Japan, and how different our environments are.

I thought how dangerous my typical gardening days must sound from Japanese prospective.

日本では刺されたら病院で'手当してもらうように、と指示されているのですね
ご心配本当にありがとうございました　完治いたしました

環境の違いをつくづく実感したのと、日本に帰国した時にブラック・ウィドゥ（クロゴケグモ）発見のニュースを見て　それがニュースになっているのに驚いたのを思い出しました

毎日ガーデニングするのに、どんな危険にさらされているかのお話です

There is a chance that a black widow is hiding in my shoes when I put them on.  We have found a few in the house/garage.

Colorado's high UV increases my chance of getting the skin cancer.

I could contract the West Nile virus - mosquitoes have been found positive with said virus in Colorado, again.

I could get bitten by a rattlesnake. Two neighbours found it on their properties.

Maybe get hit by giant hail, as I attempt to save a container full of annuals.

How about the bear and  mountain lion.  Yes, there have been sightings nearby.

And, there are the pesky yellow jackets -everywhere.

Lightning strikes, wildfires, and avalanches.

Lots of  risks aren't there?

付近の蚊が今年もウエストナイル熱ウイルスに感染されている

ガラガラヘビに噛まれるかもしれない　隣人が敷地内で発見　二件あり

大きな雹が頭に当たるかもしれない　いつもコンテナを保護しようと走り出る

熊？クーガー？　どちらも付近に出没

スズメバチ、毎日あちこちで遭遇

カミナリ、山火事、なだれ…　あ～危険がいっぱい


But, we adapt to live in the environment we are dealt with, learning as much as we can about all the risks and trying to minimize danger.

So everyday I smear tons of sunscreens and bug repellent, wearing a ridiculously big hat, and cautiously moving around my garden with a long stick in my hand.

This is not the perfect place, but making the best of what I have.

And I still rather be here then anywhere else in the world.

毎日サン・スクリーンと虫除けクリームをベタベタ塗り　とびっきり大きな帽子を被って　長い棒であちこち叩きながらガーデニングです

ここは完璧な場所ではないけれど この地以外に住むのは考えられなくなった
これを　住めば都　というのかな　　やはりコロラドが大好きです

Shiso, Perilla frutescens

Made a Shiso juice this week.  My shiso leaves are green on front and purple back.
Ummmm,what a treat for my body and my eyes after risking my life all morning!

My water lilies have healed themselves.
It was a sad sight after the hail storm, but they came back strong.

I adore this clematis.

池沿いには二種のリシマキアが限られた湿地コーナーで格闘中

Two lysimachias are fighting to spread in confined wet area by the pond.

このオカトラノオは　よく「植えて後悔したプランツ・リスト」に登場します
ここは大丈夫ですがもっとオープンな場所でじわじわ広がっている子をちょっと心配しています

くるんとした尻尾がなんとも可愛いが　なかなかのくせもの

This white gooseneck loosestrife often appears on gardener's "I regret to have planted this plant" list.
She is contained here, but I'm a little worried about the other one in the more open area.

Such a cute tail.. , but looks can be deceiving.

**スズメバチ事件**

スズメバチに刺されました
数年前　足を刺された時に応急処置をしなかったので夏みかんのように腫れてしまった経験があるんです
で、今回はあるもの全部使ってみました

まずは、「ショックで倒れるかもしれないからね」と夫を脅かし
アンモニア・ローラー
タイガーバーム　（これ、何が入っているんでしょうね～）
氷湿布を一時間
アンチヒスタミン剤を服用

何が効いたのか分かりませんが痛みも腫れも殆ど無く　少し痒いくらいです
痒みが酷い時は再度の氷湿布で楽になります

中指の関節を刺されたのでこれが腫れて曲がらなくなったら…変なジェスチャーと誤解されそうだ！　　腫れなくてよかった。


**yellow jacket incident**

I got stung by a yellow jacket.

When I was stung a few years ago I didn't take immediate action, and I had to deal with a lot of pain and a grapefruit size bump on my leg for a long time.

A lesson learned and this is what I did immediately after the sting:

Told my husband to be aware in case I pass out
Applied After Bite (ammonia)
Applied Tiger balm (I don't know what it is!)
Iced for 1 hour
Took Benadryl (antihistamine)

I don't know which action I took actually worked, but I was able to alleviate most pain and swelling, and one day later I only have a slight bump and discomfort.  Additional icing seems to get rid of itching when it become bothersome.

I'm so relieved that I have swelling under control especially since I got stung on my middle finger's joint.
Can you imagine having to deal with a swollen you know what finger sticking out?  I mean... phew!

Maybe because my Oriental poppy and red horned poppy didn't bloom this year due to excess moisture and lack of sun, the breadseed poppy is opening up with abandon -and making me happy.

今春の悪天候の為サーモンピンクのオリエンタル・ポピーや例年こぼれ種から発芽する赤いポピーが咲きませんでした
その代わりブレッドシード・ポピーがたくさん咲いてくれています　嬉しいな

Two species roses are also in bloom. 
Since I don't protect (no bubble wrapping here) my roses during our harsh winter, these tough species roses are the only kind that don't die down to the ground.  They are not those gorgeous, take your breath away roses, but I'm rather fond of their simple form.

わたしは冬囲いをしないので地上の茎が厳しいコロラドの冬の寒さに耐えてくれるのは原種系だけ…
息をのむような豪華さはありませんがこんな素朴なバラが好きです

I've been busy planting summer vegetables and (still) cleaning washed out mulch and compost from the earlier heavy rain.  All tomatoes and peppers are in, and I even managed to find Shishito pepper and komatsuna plants this year!  I've harvested about 2 cups of peas today, and will be making sweet pea rice tonight.  It's not my husband's favorite, but I have to have this seasonal dish with the baby sweet peas before June is over.

夏野菜の植え込みと先日の豪雨の後片付（まだ）流されたマルチやコンポストのお掃除でてんてこ舞いでしたが　やっとトマトもペッパー類も植え終わりました　そして今年初めて獅子唐と小松菜の苗も見つけたんですよ！タグには shishito Pepper, Komatsuna  と書いてありました

今日グリーンピースを2カップ収穫　（ちなみにアメリカの1カップは237mlです）
今晩　青豆ごはんを炊きます　夫の好物ではないみたいなのですが（以前まあまあだねと言っていた）わたしが大好きな旬の青豆ごはん、6月中にいただきます～

旬のもの、なにか好物ありますか？　
日本のものは何でも美味しいからな…羨ましいです

finally sunny やっと晴天

去年このプリムラを植えた時　こんな半砂漠地帯でちゃんと育つかしら？　と、心配だったのですが、今春の異常な雨量のおかげで　うちの小さなシェイド・コーナーでも綺麗なお花をつけてくれました

I wasn't sure if this primrose was going to survive our dry climate when I planted it late fall, but she is thriving in my little shady corner thanks to constant moisture we had this spring.   

The 日陰！

５月の終雪、雹、それからウサギの被害に負けず育ってくれたサヤエンドウ、ニンニクの茎を収穫しました
日光不足だったので少々貧弱ですがそれでも嬉しい収穫です

I harvested my snow peas and garlic scapes* despite the late snow, rabbits, hail and more rabbits.
They are a little anemic because we didn't have much sunshine, but I was pleased to get them.

この地域の年平均降水量はたったの15インチ、38cm なのですが　先週、12時間で2.5インチ、6.35cm近く雨が降りました　凄かった～

Considering our average annual precipitation is about 15 inches (including snow total), receiving almost two and a half inches of rain within 12 hours was, well, epic.  

でも、この異常に湿った気候がやっと、やっと終わりを告げてくれたようで　今お日様が地面を乾かしてくれています、もうすぐ掘れそう～
週末のガーデンセンターはまるでお祭りのようにとても込むのでその前に、と、金曜日朝方　急いで行ってきました　他のガーデナーさん達もきっとこの日を首を長くして待っていたはず…

購入したお野菜の苗を車に積み込んで帰路に向かう頃にはダッシュボードの外気温度は37.2ºCを示していました！

何はともあれやっと庭で　遊べる　お仕事できるのがとても嬉しい！
夏野菜を早く植えつけないと時間切れ寸前です

But unusual wet weather patterns seem to be over and it is sunny, and my soil is almost dry enough to plant.
I made a mad dash to a garden center Friday with a mission to beat the weekend pandamonia.  I knew that every single gardener in the Denver metro area was itching to "dig".

I loaded vegetable plants into my car, and when I hit the road, the outside temperature on the dashboard was showing 99º F!

Anyway, I'm so happy that I can finally play, I mean work in my garden, because I was running out of time to put the summer vegetables in the ground.

A few annuals and perennials came home with vegetables -just a few.




*garlic scapes are the "flower stalks" of hardneck garlic plants, they are edible and delicious. They taste like a strong green onion with a crunchy texture, and are sold at grocery stores in Japan (and I suspect other Asian countries).

tattered ぼろぼろの

Yesterday started out as a beautiful day.
I gardened in the morning, and really enjoyed taking pictures and making plans about what I'll do for my garden this year.
I showered, had a light lunch, and went shopping.
As I was checking out at my last stop, suddenly the rumbling began.

It hailed and rained like cats and dogs.

Today's post was supposed to be titled "beautiful June".

昨日は清々しい6月の朝でした
午前中ガーデニングを楽しんで　写真を撮ったり植え付けの計画をしたり有意義に過ごしました
それからシャワーを浴びて軽い昼食をとり買い物へ外出
最後のお店でチェックアウトをしていたら突然「ゴロゴロゴロ」と雷、
そしてまるでバケツをひっくり返したように凄い量のヒョウと大雨が降りました

今日のポストの題名は「beautiful June」の予定だったのですが…

But I had to change the title after this.

Tattered Japanese lilac leaves and water lilies looking like floating maple leaves.

ボロボロに叩き落とされた低木の葉、睡蓮の葉は破れてしまい　まるでもみじの葉が水に浮いているようです
　

Needless to say most plants look very stripped now, and of course I'm sad, but I'm surprisingly calm about this ordeal. It's been 20 years since I've started to garden in Colorado.  I suppose my nerves have become thicker each year, and/or have learned to look at the brighter side.  
We are dry with a roof over our head.  I didn't get into an accident as I drove home, although many drivers were pulling themselves aside.  Our dog didn't go insane with the thunder and hail noise while he was alone.  I've learned that you can HOLD the switch down and close the garage door even though the safety sensor keeps tripping off by hail.  And, I didn't have annuals or warm crop vegetables planted, yet!

I cleared the sidewalks, driveway and the pond today, and still have much cleanup to do.  
But I'll think about that tomorrow.
Like Scarlett O'Hara said, "After all, tomorrow is another day".


ほとんどのプランツの葉は破れて哀れな姿となりました、勿論悲しい　でも不思議な事に心は動揺していません　コロラドでガーデニングを始めて20年、毎年少しずつ神経がずぶとくなってきたのでしょうか？　それと良い方に考える事ができるようになったのか・・・
家があって濡れる心配もない、怖い思いをして帰って来たけれど（たくさんの車が待機駐車していました）事故にあうこともなかった、カミナリやヒョウの大きな音を怖がる留守番中の愛犬も大丈夫だった、ヒョウが光電センサーに当たりガレージドアがなかなか閉まらなかったけれどスイッチをしばらく押し続けたらやっと閉まった
それと夏野菜や寄せ植えはまだ植えていなかった～！

歩道とドライブウエイ、そして池だけはお掃除しましたが後はまた明日からやり直しです

スカーレット・オハラの言うとおり　明日は新しい一日の始まりです

今朝、おそる　おそる　ブラインドを開けて覗く...

深夜　重たい雪が20cm程降りましたが、あっという間に溶けました

8 inches of very heavy snow came down fast over night, and melted as fast!

夫がオートミール・クランベリー・クッキーをたくさん焼いてくれました

（これはあんまり甘すぎず美味しいよ！　美味しかったから食べ過ぎたけど...^ ^）


いつも一日遅れですが、皆さん楽しい母の日を過ごされましたように


And my husband baked me a huge batch of oatmeal cranberry cookies.
They came out excellent and we ate way too many.

So...it was all good.  ^ ^

このところ雨の日が続いています

It has been raining all week here in Colorado.

コロラドでは珍しい　この、しとしと降る雨にアジュガは大喜びですが…
（この時期の雨は通常どしゃ降り）

庭仕事が何もできなくて

庭主は困っています

And they are not the gully washers we normally have,  

but nice gentle raindrops.

My ajuga seems to love this rain, but ...I can't garden!
