You normally don't associate the act of knitting with summer, but wait!

We have linen!

通常　盛夏の候に編み物なんて頭に浮かびませんよね

そんな時期はリネンの糸で編みます

A perfect poncho to drape over a simple tank or sundress.

My preferred knitting project design has changed drastically about two year ago.  Come to think of it, my fashion sense had changed around that time. They became softer, simpler and more back to basic in style, and I'm actually wearing those knitted pieces more often and feeling comfortable in them.

ノースリーブの上から羽織るのに丁度いいポンチョです

約二年前からでしょうか、編んでみたいと思うデザインが変わりました
考えてみれば　その頃から着たいもの、ファッション感覚が変わったのです
もっとソフトに、そしてシンプルで基本に戻る、バック・トゥ・ベーシックに
そしてこれらのシンプルなニットは着心地もよく使用数も増えました
（ラベリイ記録、怠っています　記録は後日役に立つことも多く　近々投稿を済ませたい）


Knitting with linen can be a little tricky as there is no "give", aka elasticity.
I need to keep a consistent tension while I knit therefore somewhat tiresome, and I can only knit a short duration at a time.  Which works fine for me in summertime because, well, I'm busy gardening.

リネン糸は伸縮性がないので　編み難くて手が疲れてしまい長時間続けては編めないのですが
シーズン中は庭仕事庭あそびで忙しいので　なんとなく丁度いい

In the end, I'm very happy with this simple linen piece which drapes beautifully and feels so good against the skin.
I'm already working on a next one with a different color and a slight variation.

リネンのニットは使い始めるとテレンと綺麗にドレープしてくれて
その反面、肌触りはクリスプで着心地最高

違った色でデザインを少し変えて次のものを編み始めています

On a side note, the pendant you see here is a real diamond.
I know, it's huge!
It was a gift from my father-in-law when he worked in Saudi Arabia as an instructor in the 80s.
Apparently, you could go to the beach, put your head close to the sand and pick up a sparkle here and there to spot the row diamonds.  Then, you send those row diamonds to Thailand to processed into wearable jewelries.  The quality may not be up to par, but it's such a conversation piece and I rather like this humble rock.

余談ですが　このペンダント、本物のダイヤモンドです　大きいでしょう～
80年代にサウジ・アラビアでインストラクターをしていた義父からのギフトでした
話によると、海岸で頭を地面に近づけてキラキラするものを探すとダイヤの原石を見つけることができたそうです　それをタイまで送ってジュエリーに加工してもらったようです

それほどハイ・クオリティーのものではないと思いますが　この裏話のあるシンプルな「石」、お気に入りのひとつです

hats for newborns

今年もクリスマス・ニッティングのスタートが遅れてしまい、何枚できるか心配だったのですが
この、忙しくて何がなんだか分からなくなってしまいがちな時期に
クリスマス・スピリットを自分自身にリマインドするためにもできるだけ編んでみることにしました

目標はこども病院に15枚寄贈

どんぐり型で小さな耳カバーが付いた新生児用の可愛いデザイン、とっても簡単に編めます




As for Christmas knitting.

I had a very late start, and didn't know how many hats I could finish.

But I wanted to try anyway -just to keep me in line during this hectic and often confusing time.

My goal is to knit 15 hats to donate to a local children's hospital.

Cone shape with small ear flaps -cutest newborn hats ever, and quick and easy to boot.

Dear Mom,

I was worried that I may not be able to see it befor I leave for Japan.

Japanese beads

日本のビーズ

どうしても日本から一日遅れになってしまい　なんだかもどかしいのですが
イギリスのデザイナーさんから許可をいただいたので
手編みのショールをオークションに出品し、東日本大震災支援に参加させていただくことになりました

Japan marked the second anniversary of its earthquake, tsunami and nuclear catastrophe.
I'm already one day behind..., but I was able to receive a blessing from the designer 
and am putting the shawl up for auction to raise money for Japan.

編み込んだ 約370個のビーズは日本製の Miyuki ビーズです
       （かぎ針で一個ずつ各位置の編み目に引っ掛けてから棒針で編みます）
日本からはるばるやって来た小さな小さなビーズたちは
わたしのささやかな日本支援を、きらり、きらり、と輝いて手助けしてくれました


がんばれ　にっぽん、かがやけ　にっぽん


The 370 pieces of beads used are Miyuki glass seed beads.
These tiny beads came all the way from Japan and helped my humble effort to support Japan...
with each sparkle,
all the way.

70% alpaca, 30% silk, 17” deep x 70” wide (43 x 178 cm)

もし、

娘がいたら

シンプルな白いドレスに…羽織ってくれたら嬉しいだろうな

muted colors and jewel tones

くすんだ色、鮮やかな色

光彩の反射の具合が違うのでしょうか？

カラカラに乾いた紫外線の強いコロラドと、しっとりした優しい空気の日本では
同じ色が全く違ってみえます

Maybe the light reflects differently -?
Color looks different under our dry intense sun, from the moist and gentle Japanese air.

日本やイギリスのガーデンにはロマンチックなパステルカラーがとても似合いますね。
うちの庭でパステルカラーがちっとも映えないことは　以前話しましたが
それは、着るものにも同じようなことが言えるかもしれません
こちらではそう見えないのに、日本に持って帰ってみるとケバケバしい色で着れないことがあります
日本では特に　「年相応に」　と、気をつけているのも事実ですが・・・　（あははっ、イチオウです）

Pastels look so lovely in English and Japanese gardens.
I have talked about how the pastels look washed out in my Colorado garden before.
I can say a similar thing about our clothing.
A garment can look perfectly fine in Colorado. Yet looks too brassy to wear in Japan.
(I have to say that I am more conscientious about acting "appropriately" in Japan, too.  wink, wink )

今回は手染めの糸でくすんだ色のショールと鮮やかなカウルを編んでみました

Anyway, it is a concern of mine when I knit for someone in Japan.

Well, I have chosen both a muted color shawl and a jewel tone cowl this time- just to be safe.

地味すぎませんように・・
派手すぎませんように・・・

I hope it's not too drab.
I hope it's not too bright.

Christmas giving

常々、ボランティア活動をなさっている寛大な方は山ほどいらっしゃるので気恥ずかしい話ですが、
わたしのような凡人は 　クリスマス･スピリットにあやかって・・・
手編みの帽子をチルドレンズ･ホスピタルに寄付しようと思います　（ひとつ、あとすこし・・）
できるだけコロラドのプロ･スポーツチームの色を使ったので目がチカチカしました～
子供たちが喜んでくれるのを願って♥

There are so many generous people volunteering year-round. 
I feel awkward talking about it, but every Christmas I feel that I could have done more,
should be doing more, would do more.
These are my small contributions this year for a local children's hospital.　(A little more to go on one hat..)
Some of Colorado pro-sports organization colors were really hard on my eyes!
I hope kids will like them. ♥

この街に住む一人の女性、カレンさんのアイデアから
世界中に広まったプロジェクト･ライナス（リーナス）は、つらい経験をしている子供たちの為に
手作りのブランケット（手編み、キルト等）を作る団体です
会合にも毎月参加していたのに、いつの間にか遠のいていました

An organization Project Linus was started by one woman in this town.
I used to be an active participant  -made many blankets, attended meetings.
I don't know how and when I started to push it a side.

心配ごとが重なり、自分の心に余裕がなくなっていたのだと思います
上手く対応できるようになったのか、ただ慣れただけか、わかりません
どちらにせよ、少しでもこんな事ができるようになった自分を嬉しく感じます

できる人が、できる時に、できるだけ
そんな肩を張らないリラックスしたアメリカのチャリティー精神が好きです

来年は、ブランケットを編もう

Maybe because there have been many worries that are out of my control.
I don't know if I'm able to deal with it better, or have gotten use to it.
At any case, I'm happy that I'm able to give again, however small may be.

"When you can, if you can, however you can"
I appreciate the relaxed attitude of an American giving spirit.

I hope to knit blankets next year.

やぶから棒な話ですが、編み物コミュニティーのRavelryで

'東北の被害者の方々にみんなで手編みの暖かい物を作ろうグループ' 
に参加しました。

皆さんそれぞれボランティア活動が盛んですが

'手作りマフラーを、東北に' プロジェクトは、送られてきたものを
大学生さん達自身が、被害者の方々に直接手渡してくださるらしいです。
（年内のみ、新年以降は郵送予定）　

海外からはなかなか現地とのつながりが難しいので

世界各地在住の日本人が参加してある様子です。

ぼうしも使ってもらえるといいな。

Just a quick post about " knit for Japan KAL" on Ravelry.

Northeastern Japan will be mercilessly cold and snowy soon.

College students in Japan have pledged to hand deliver donated items 
to the quake and tsunami victims in those area.
(until end of this year, then they may have to mail)

There are many organizations trying to help and they are all appreciated but

I'm hoping that it will warm their heart and soul when they receive something handmade.

お庭がとっても暑い時間は編み物。

When it's too hot to garden, I knit.

昨日やっと完成したカーデガンです。
初めて、大豆から作られた毛糸を使いました。
セールで見つけた時はショッキングオレンジだったのですが
 タンパク質系の糸であればKool-Aidという子供用飲料粉で

染められるという事をどこかで聞いたような。

This is my first project with soy yarn.

When I found this lace weight yarn in the clearance bin, they were bright orange.

 Then I remembered an article about dying protein yarn with Kool-Aid. 
Soy has protein!

ソイヤーンはまるでシルクのような肌触りです。

お花のレース模様とピコットの縁取りが好きでこのデザインを選びました。

オリジナルはもっとぴっちりしたデザインでしたが

それはあまり好きではないし、夏らしくと思い、ルースで 'てれん' とした感じに。

ボタンの裏側にはテープを縫い付けています。

Soy yarn is very soft almost like silk.

I choose a lace with picot edge design cardigan "Laar"

Original design was made with negative ease but I made it looser since I don't care for tight clothes.

 お庭で忙しかったので一ヶ月以上かかりましたが

結構気に入っています。

縦に伸びてしまって、もう少しレース部分を短くすればよかったです。

サマードレスや、カプリパンツの上にどうかしら？
One month later I'm thrilled with the finished project.

Soy yarn did grow vertically and I wish I made the lace part a little shorter but
I think it is still acceptable and I can wear it with pants or dress.
