October is...

Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

My friend's chemotherapy has begun this month.

I took pumpkin soup and cornbread to her.
With candied ginger and chamomile tea which I heard could ease the nausea.

I know that everyone is different.  But would you please let me know if you know anything else that might help?

Fall/Broncos hat to cheer her up.

company 来客

Helianthus Maximiliana 'Santa Fe'

こんにちは

週末 夫の社友さんと奥さん達をディナーにお招きしたりして
その用意で忙しくしていました

 How have you been?

We had my husband's co-workers and their wives for dinner over the weekend,
and I had been busy getting ready for it.

わたしにとっては親しい友人という関係ではないので
やはり 緊張したのかな
終わって 気が抜けた~

ふう~

My husband sees the guys everyday, but I don't really know them.
I had fun, but still tiring -you know how it is.

Now, it's done with, and I'm still feeling restless.

さて、わたしがキッチンで慌しくしている間
夫がお庭を案内してくれたのですが
何を説明したのかちょっと不思議です

My husband took the guests for a mini-garden tour while I was in the kitchen.

I wonder what he has told them.

9月になると開花中のピークのものはめっきり少なくなりますが
このレモンイエローのサンフラワーがちょうどよいタイミングに満開で
季節感あるセンターピースになってくれました

We don't have many varieties of flowers in September, but this lemon-yellow sunflower was in the peak condition, and made a perfect centerpiece reflecting the season.

ディナーが終わって
暗くなったパティオでこのチムニアに火を入れて・・

やはり女性が一番暖かいところに集まりました
日が沈むとかなり温度が下がります

After dinner, we sat around our chiminea on the patio.

Ladies gathered close to chiminea since it gets quite chilly after sunset.

geranium 'Rozanne'

今年、たくさんの木を失って悲しかったけれど
9月のくたびれた心身をこうして暖めてくれています

We lost many trees this year.
It was sad throughout the year, but they are warming our broken hearts and sore bodies in September.

追記;日本のきゅうりをスティック・サラダでお出ししたのですが、あまりの美味しさにびっくりしてありました。「こんな甘いきゅうり食べた事ない」だそうです。 嬉しいですね。

languages

Salvia pitcheri

このサルビアが咲き出すともうすぐシーズンの終わりです 淋しいな

This is an "end of the season is very close" salvia in my garden.  It makes me a little sad.

I left Japan 27 years ago.
Many things can change in 27 years. I know that I have changed a lot.
Most noticeably my Japanese language became very questionable to say the least.
Because I don't use the language on a daily bases, words don't come out like they once did.
English is a hard language for me to learn.  Nothing, I mean there is nothing in common between English and Japanese.  I know an American man who learned to speak fluent Chinese, but gave up on Japanese.  "Too hard.", he said.

One of the reasons I've started to write in two languages is to relearn Japanese and attempt to improve my English -I know that I make many mistakes, and I really appreciate your patience.

Anyway, when I was asked a question about a Japanese character translation, I wasn't sure...
Here I am asking my wonderful Japanese friends for help.

~~~
お尋ねしたい事があります、
ある人から
英語のbelieve の意味の漢字をイレズミしたいのだけれど それは「信」で良いのか?
と、聞かれました
このbelieveは神を信じる、信仰する、と言う意味でよく宗教的に使われますが、この場合そうではなくて
自分の可能性を信じる、ゴール達成を信じる、夢が叶うことを信じる、を表現したいのだそうです
さらに、この漢字を単独で使ったら変だろうか?と心配してあります
考えれば考える程 なんだか いいような、変なような・・自信がありません
何しろ刺青ですから責任重大です
他にもっとぴったりする漢字、又は熟語があるかしら・・・
日本を離れて27年、日常使わない言葉の記憶が薄れてしまいました
どうぞお知恵を拝借させてください
本当は 止めておけば~、と言いたいところですが会った事もない知人の知人、余計なお世話なのでぐっと口を噤んでいます
こんな奇妙な質問がたまに回ってきます トホホ・・
vegetable news from Arizona
花便り・・というか、野菜便り が暖かいアリゾナ州の友人から届きました
彼女は4~10月はコロラド、11~3月はアリゾナにお住まいです
I've received a gardening news mail from a friend in Arizona.
She lives in Colorado April to October, and November to March in Arizona.
彼女曰く、
「こんなに大きなカリフラワーとダイコン・ラディッシュが採れるのよ~
   ダイコンを食べるといつもあなたのことを思い出すわ~」
She said:
"Look at these giant Cauliflower and Daikon radish!
       I always think of you when I eat Daikon"
この時期は冬野菜が大豊作で食べても食べても追いつかないそうです
うらやましい~
She also said that this time of the year it is hard to eat as fast as it is coming in.
I am green with envy!
J ちゃん、お便りありがとう!
Thank you for thinking of me, J!
ダイコンという日本語でわたしを思い出すのか、
わたしの足が思い浮かぶのか?
そこのところは聞かずにおこうね
pass-along plants
ヘメロカリス;デイリリーの季節です
 増殖旺盛で移植が容易なので 花友さん達の間では 'おすそ分け・プランツ' として人気
うちにいる子も皆、友人の庭からやって来ました
It's daylily season.
Hemerocallis; daylilies multiply fast and easy to transplant,
which make them one of the best "pass-along plants".
In fact, mine all came from friends' garden.
'Prairie Blue Eyes'
土曜日の朝は風のない曇り空
それでも開いてくれていた 睡蓮の写真が
やっと撮れました
Saturday morning was calm and cloudy, yet, a waterlily was open and I was able to take a photo.
Finally!
この後、豪雨になったので 来週は又 庭掃除に追われそうです
でも、超乾燥状態の今年、文句は言えません
雨を見て、思わず 'ばんざ~い!' と叫んだら
地下室から夫の 'バンザ~イ!'のエコーが聞こえました
夫は 日本を離れて26年も経つので、
在日の際、少しだけ覚えた日本語はほとんど忘れてしまった様子ですが
日常の挨拶と、'ちょっと、お待ちください' (日本から電話があった時必要)は覚えているようです
それと、よほど印象が強かったのでしょうか
お魚屋さんの あの気合の入った
'へい、らっしゃい、 らっしゃい、らっしゃ~い!'
を たまに言い出します
なんで?
much needed rain. Hooray!
恵みの雨、 ばんざ~い!
30度C近い、異常に暑い日がしばらく続きました
今夜、嵐通過予報、今朝は少し涼しくなったので
あれこれ、やりかけの作業を済ましてしまおうと
早朝から七時間、休み無しで庭仕事      ふう~
愚痴ではありませんよ、嬉しい悲鳴?!
It has been unseasonably warm April.
With strong storms predicted tonight, it was cooler this morning.
I wanted to finish up a few chores that I had started in the garden, and ended up spending seven straight hours gardening.  Phew!
I'm not complaining, mind you. Happily exhausted.
綺麗に咲いてくれた白いライラックの小枝で 小さなアレンジメントを拵えて
また 今日もすごい強風
少々の暑さ、寒さ、小雨等は平気ですが
この強風には毎年悩まされます
明日は もっと優しい園芸日和になりますように♪
Another windy day here in Colorado.
I can accommodate most other weather conditions,
but haven't found a way to deal with the strong wind during the gardening season.
Maybe tomorrow will be a better day ♪
best friend
二歳の時お隣に引っ越してきたKちゃん
わたしが庭仕事に出ると必ず出できて塀越しに 'ハーイ、チコー'
うちのワンコをなででくれたりお花の名前をきかれたりの仲良しさん
Little-K moved to the house next door when she was two years old.
She came out every time I went out in the garden.  " Hi, Chiko-o."
We would talk over the fence and she would pet our dog, ask questions about plants - we were friends.
毎日お花をあげていたら
お母さんがマフィンやクッキーを焼く度に
お兄ちゃんと Kちゃんが 走ってうちにも持ってきてくれて
I'd give her a flower everyday and Little-K and her brother would bring muffins and cookies to us when their mom baked.
お母さんが後でそっと教えてくれたKちゃんの幼稚園初日の会話
ママ: お友達できた?
    K: うん
ママ: 良かったねぇ、ベストフレンドは誰かな?
    K: ・・・
ママ: 名前覚えてる?
    K: チコー!
Her mom told me what Little -K said when her mom asked about the first day of preschool.
  Mom:  Have you made friends?
    K: Yes.
  Mom: That's wonderful. Who is your best friend?
    K: ・・・
  Mom:  Do you remember her name?
    K: Chiko-o!
ピンクのお花が好きだったKちゃん
去年の春、引っ越して遠くに行っちゃった
今日、新しいお隣さんが越してこられたのをみて
ふと、そんな事を思い出しました
Kちゃん、会いたいな
Little-K loved pink flowers.
She moved away last spring.
When I saw the new neighbor moving in today,
I thought about that story.
I miss you, Little-K.
Interesting idiom /ちょっと気になる英熟語
on the fence : (塀の上) どっちつかず、まだ決断をしていない
I'm still (sitting) on the fence about digging up the rose.
その薔薇を掘り起こすかどうかまだ決心つかない~
banana bread and tea
高地でのお料理は難しい
海抜 約1859mの我が家では
 気圧の関係で、お湯の沸点は92度
外側は焦げ易いのに
内側にはなかなか火が通らない
High altitude cooking can be tricky.
At 6100ft/1859m above sea level,
our water boils at 198ºF/92ºC due to the decreased atmospheric presser.
Easy to burn outside, yet hard to cook inside.
Pie in the Sky  by Susan G. Purdy
 一番苦労するのはベーキング
Baking is the hardest of all.
クリスマスに高地ベーキングの本をもらったので
バナナブレッドでも作ろうか
 I've decided to tryout my new high altitudes (and sea level) baking book
which I received on Christmas.
Banana bread sounded good.
小麦粉をちょっと増やし
お砂糖とベーキングパウダーをちょっと減らし
酸性のものを加えると良いらしいので
バターミルク、レモンのジュースとピール(ビールではない)も気持ちだけ足してみる
Added a little flour,
subtracted a little sugar and baking-powder,
and added some buttermilk, lemon juice and peel for acidity.
中までちゃんと焼けて
カステラみたいでなかなか美味
It is done.
It is delicious!
シックなお友達にいただいたエディアールの紅茶と共に
義母が亡き祖母から受け継ぎ、そしてわたしが譲り受けたチャイナで いただく
Enjoyed with the Hédiard tea which was a gift from a dear friend
using grandma's china set; a gift from my mother-in-law.
美味しい紅茶のモナルダの香りに酔いながら
優しい人々に包まれたわたしは
幸せだなあ としみじみ思う
As the scent of monarda from the tea perfumed the air,
I thought to myself
" How lucky am I?"
New Year
新年にかなった
ことわざ と ポエム
こういうものは 訳するのがとても難しいので
そのままに...
A wise Japanese quote and a beautiful English poem for the New Year.
Something like these are so hard to translate,
so I've decided not to destroy them by doing so.
From dear friends
一日の計は朝にあり
一年の計は元旦にあり
十年の計は樹を植えるにあり
百年の計は子を教えるにあり
 ~ ~ ~
Perhaps a bit wiser,
a bit kinder, too,
a little bit braver,
a heart that's more true,
a touch of believing
I've not known before,
in joys I'm receiving
a little bit more.
A little more anxious
to reach out my hand,
despite hurt or problems
to still understand,
accepting the heartache
that life often brings,
a little more beauty
in life's simple things.
A prayer when I'm weary
as onward I trod,
a little more trusting,
believing in God,
'tis this I would wish for
within moments dear,
not a lot - just a little
this wondrous new year
.
kisses & noodles
もう、日本は大晦日ですね
アメリカのお正月はそれほど大きな祭日ではないのですが
移民の国ですから、メキシコ系、北欧系、中国系、
など、皆さんそれぞれにいろんな習慣があるようです
一般的に大晦日にはシャンペンを自宅、またはパーティ先で飲んだり
年を越す時、色んな物をたたいたり玩具を使って大きな音をたてます
それと、大切な人達に忘れずキスを
 わたしは出来るだけ年越しそばを頂きますが
休む前に食べたがらない夫には
ちょっと無理やり一口だけ
泣いたり、笑ったり、色んな出来事があったけれど
 素敵な方々と知り合うことが出来て
実りも多い年でした
拙いつぶやきに興味を示してくださってありがとうございました
来年も、また皆様とお喋りできるのを楽しみにしています
 どうぞ、良いお年をお迎え下さい
そして
今年は、大切な人々に深夜のキスはいかがですか?
It is a Japanese tradition to eat noodles on new year's eve,
a tradition based on people's association of eating the long noodles
with “crossing over from one year to the next,” and also with longer life.
I will be having noodles as I give my husband a midnight kiss.
I hope you will be with your loved ones this new year's eve whatever your traditions are.
Thank you all for visiting my humble blog,
I appreciate your support and encouragement.
I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
a gift
作った味付けナッツのギフトを差し上げて帰宅し
しばらくしたら おむかいさんの男の子が
このサンキューノートを走って持ってきてくれました
彼は、大人の身体に閉じ込められた
優しい小さな男の子
 彼が 一生懸命書いてくれたノートは、今年一番嬉しかったプレゼントでした
A boy brought me a note from across the street shortly after I took my kitchen gift.
He is a beautiful little boy trapped in a grown man's body.
 His note is the most precious Christmas gift I have received this year.
クリスマスの 本当の意味を改めて教えられた気がします
He has reminded me the true meaning of Christmas.
kitchen gift
ご近所のお友達に差し上げる
キッチンギフトを作りました
I baked last minute kitchen gifts for friends and neighbors.
味付けナッツを二種
一つはトラディショナルなスパイスを使い、
もう一つはちょっとピリッとしたものを
Spiced nuts with two different flavors.
昨夜、-17.22ºC まで下がるほど冷えたので
オーブンを使うにはもってこいの日でした
It went down to 1ºF/-17.22ºC last night; a perfect night to bake.
今日、これを配りながらクリスマスのご挨拶回りをします
美味しくできたかな?
