今年はひつじ年、あらためて編み物を楽しみたいと思います

そして、できたら糸紡ぎを学びたい、なんてたくらんでいますよ

なにかと慌しかったホリディを終えて　我家もやっと通常に戻りつつあります

After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, our house is slowly finding some normalcy.

デコレーションや窓辺のキャンドル・ライトは取り除かれ
パウダー・ルームの赤いタオルも今はまたアース・トーンに戻りました

All the decorations and candle lights by the windows put away.
A red towel in the powder-room has been changed back to earth tone.

さて、玄関のリース
毎年クリスマス用を取り外した後、どうしようかな、と迷います
歓迎を表すリース、寒いこの時期ほどドアに飾りたい

久しぶりにリースを作りました
できるだけ自然のものを使いたいのですが　冬リースは
あっという間にフリーズドライになりポロポロになってしまうので素材に気を使います

And the wreath.
I always wonder what to do with my front door when I take down the holiday wreath.
I'd like to make it welcoming, especially in the winter.

I spent an afternoon making a new wreath.
I have to be careful what to use because most natural materials quickly get freeze-dried and brittle.

何故か今すごく流行っているバーラップ（麻布）
ガーデナーですもの、勿論手持ちがありました！

わたしは「止める時を悟る」のが苦手　
レス・イズ・モアーを唱えながら・・

Do I hear burlap is in style?
Well of course I have them at hand, I'm a gardener!

I have a hard time knowing when to stop when making something.
Less is more, less is more, less is more.

誰ですか、ミイラみたいなんて言っているのは？　（笑

Christmas spirit

毎年クリスマスが近づくと

「私淑したい　真のクリスマス・スピリット、
　　クリスチャンではありませんが一緒にお祝いさせてください」と思うのです

ですから、デコレーションはどちらかというと控えめに…と、心がけています

My thoughts on every Christmas are;

"Although I'm not a Christian, may I join you to celebrate the Christmas spirit?" 


I decorate modestly.

2メートルちょっとの我家のスリムなツリーはこちらでは小さめですが
ラッピングしたプレゼントを（こちらも控えめに）この下に置き、
小さなものは吊るしたストッキングの中に入れます

Our tree is slim and small, but we manage to place a few (modest) gifts underneath,
and a stocking stuffer or two, of course.

今年は手編みのものを作れなかったので
フリースの子供用ブランケットを10枚縫って寄贈しました

Since I could't knit to give this year, I made ten fleece blankets for local children.  

病院でクリスマスを過ごさなければならない子供達、


カラフル・ブランケットで少しでもこころが明るくなりますように


For the children who has to spend Christmas in a hospital.


May the colorful blankets help brighten their spirit.

sweet Valentine

バレンタインデー、

こちらでは、男女　関係なく お祝いします

Tomorrow is the Valentine's Day.

It is the day for the girls to show her love to the guys - in Japan.

But, here in America, love for everyone!

botanical art

十数年前の話ですが、
映画のシーンで 壁全体に額に入ったボタニカルアートがぎっしりと並んでいたのを見たことがあります。　
当時、 どうしても、どうしてもその壁を再現したくて
でも 上質のボタニカルアートをそんなに沢山、しかも全部マットを敷いて額に入れるような予算はありませんでした

それで 思いついたのがこれ、クロスステッチのボタニカルアート

Over ten years ago, a movie scene captivated me. 
There was a wall in the house that was covered with framed botanical art prints.

I so wanted to create that wall in my house, but we had no budget for that many botanical prints- especially matted and framed.  So, I came up with my own botanical art.

図書館にお花のデザインの本があったので、そのチャートから育てていたプランツを選びました

この頃はまだ働いている時期で 忙しく、六つしか刺せませんでしたが
マットは白いフェルトを切って作り、レベルも付けて 自分なりに本格的にしたつもり


今見ると子供っぽいですね、でもその時は我ながらうっとりでした
一生懸命作ったので不恰好でも愛着があり、いまだに飾っています

I found a cross stitch book with floral motifs and chose plants that were in my garden.  I was able to complete only six since I was still working and didn't have much free time. 
I used white felt sheets to cut out the mats and even attached name labels in attempt to make them look professional.


They look rather childish now, but I was so proud of myself when I hung them on a wall for the first time.

I get easily attached to anything handmade and they are still displayed on our wall, privately in our bedroom.

そして数年後、本屋さんのバーゲンコーナーで見つけた
尊敬するボタニカル・アーティスト、 Pierre - Joseph Redoutè さんの作品集
たぶんプリントをお持ちのガーデナーさんも多いのではないでしょうか？

これは、ユリ科の全集ですが、素晴らしいバラの絵をまとめたものも出版されていますね

-それも欲しいなぁ

Years later, I was delighted when I found a book of THE botanical artist- Pierre-Joseph Redoutè at a bargain price.　　
I could imagine many gardeners having his work on their walls.
This is the lily family version, but a beautiful rose version has been published as well
- I'd like to have it, too.

471ページのうっとり
いつの日か額に入れてあげたい


471 pages to admire. 
I'd love to frame them someday.

昨夜、-17.22ºC まで下がるほど冷えたので

オーブンを使うにはもってこいの日でした

It went down to 1ºF/-17.22ºC last night; a perfect night to bake. 

今日、これを配りながらクリスマスのご挨拶回りをします

美味しくできたかな？

Ｍｉｚｕさんのブログで知った愛海ちゃんのことを想いながら編みました。

来週、他のセットと一緒に震災支援プロジェクトに送ります。

I thought about a little girl who lost everything.

The UNICEF photo in the middle of  Ms. Mizu's blog is a four year old girl falling asleep 

after writing a letter for an hour to her missing mother.

The letter says " Dear Mama, I hope you are alive. How are you?"

母に手紙を書きました 今、98 cents かかります。

去年発行されたこの切手のデザインはとてもお気に入り

こんなボタニカルシリーズが続くといいなぁ。

I love the Pinecone forever stamps.

I hope they will always have nice botanical series like these.

種子採取期ですね。
 種は生きているものなので
 採種したら通気性のある紙袋保存が良いと聞きます

水分の多い種は特にそうですね。

It's the seed collecting season, isn't it? 
  Since seeds are living things, I collect them in paper envelope 
and try to let them breathe。

　～ のりもテープもいらない種封筒の作り方です ～

Here is a handy way to make a seed envelope without glue or tape.

 長方形の紙をこんな風に折ります

Fold a rectangle paper like this

はみ出ている部分をかぶせるように折ります

Fold over the longer part like this

ひっくり返して真中を検討し両側からこう折ります
上部は左右が合わなくても大丈夫ですが合ったほうがしっかりするようです

Flip, eyeball the center and fold the both sides like this
The top folds don't have to meet, but will make it securer if they do. 

 下側の部分を折ってエリの下にタックします

Fold the wings and tuck in like this

種封筒ができました。　 ちゃんと説明できたかな？

Now, you have a seed envelope! Hope it wasn't too confusing.

外出の際、メモ紙しかない時などに重宝します

 しっかりした封筒ができますよ。

I find this extremely handy when you are out and about 
and stays very secure too.
