New Year and misunderstood monkeys

Happy New Year!

Wishing you a New Year filled with new Hope,
new Joy and new Beginnings!

The three wise monkeys over the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan source

This is a year of monkey, and I feel obligated to tell you about
 these misunderstood monkeys.

I 'm sure that you have heard of
"See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil"

When I first found out how they were commonly interpreted in western world
as "turning a blind eye", I was very sad.

Because I was taught something completely different about them.

In a nutshell, they are teaching you to look and hear good in people, and say only something nice.

Isn't this better?

Hi!

I was going to get back to you when I got to a good place to break after I started a project.

Well, I thought I'll never get there.

But, first, an orange talk.

I took this picture early spring, and never had a chance to talk about it.
It seems the right topic, so, why not?

They are navel orange, Sumo orange, Minneola orange and Mandarin orange. (clockwise)
In japan, people eat tons of oranges when in season, but mostly mandarin variety.
I'm having a hard time finding good snacking oranges like the ones I've enjoyed growing up.
Sure, there are Cuties, Halos, etc.
Problem is that they are -well, okay, but not great.

So, I looked up.

Sumo orange was hybridized in Japan.
It's easy to eat, sweet and keeps well.
Why this one is called Sumo in America is another discussion.

The Minneola orange is a cross between tangerine and grapefruit.
It's very good if you want a cross between tangerine and grapefruit...

I've learned to seek out the word "Mandarin" in store display and stickers, and so far so good.
Although the word is misused often. :o(
If you see "Satsuma Mandarin", just get as many as you can carry.

As for painting orange peel...

Our wall texture is called "orange peel", and it is a pain in the neck to paint.

You paint and paint and still don't fill in all the nooks and crannies.

I start out painting W or M and spread out the paint as they tell you to.

Our ceiling is 10 feet high.  It's taking 5.5 gallons of paint so far to paint the pink lines below.

Dining and living rooms are next.

There is a theoretical reason for my painting, and I'll talk about that,

when we get there.

When life gives you lemons,

It has been hot -record hot here in Denver metro area.
I have a very small time frame to safely transplant in this area and very frustrated to say the least.
Yesterday, I went out to run errand and Hard Lemonade sounded great in this heat.  So I picked them up on the way home.

Let it be a record that

57 year old Chiko was carded on this Monday, September Twenty Eighth, Year Twenty Fifteen.

( Just ignore the fact that some stores ask for ID regardless, this place is not one of them :))

Happy Feet Penguin

「When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.」

wet May

Linum usitatissimum

Hi, I've been slacking off here...

Usually May is a gardener's delight month here in the foothills of Colorado.
It's been wet.
We've been getting snow, rain or hail, something wet everyday, and almost all-day.
Our sprinkler is still off.

I've never seen May this wet before.

Well, despite the gray sky and no sunshine, my flax is blooming up front.

We went camping with Daisy (our camper) in northern New Mexico this Memorial day weekend.

I saw naturalized flax patches next to I-25 in southern Colorado.
I don't like to stop on the highways unnecessarily,
but I wish I had a picture to show you how lovely they were.

Speaking of highways,
when I saw this sign for the first time when I started to drive in US (in Ohio),
can you guess what I thought it was telling me?

Well, I knew the word "shoulder" only as an anatomical word.

I thought they were telling me to relax my shoulder and prepare for a challenging driving condition, and didn't realize it was a warning for a soft edge along the side of a road that is unsuitable for vehicles to drive on.

I don't recall learning this in school, and never knew the roads had shoulders!

Just a little chit-chat post, -the ground is too saturated to garden!  ;-(

hats for newborns

As for Christmas knitting.

I had a very late start, and didn't know how many hats I could finish.

But I wanted to try anyway -just to keep me in line during this hectic and often confusing time.

My goal is to knit 15 hats to donate to a local children's hospital.

Cone shape with small ear flaps -cutest newborn hats ever, and quick and easy to boot.

~ May every newborns around the world receive warm milk and a warm hat. ~

U. S. Mail

We tend to get things done with convenient emails and instant massages nowadays.
Still, my heartbeat skips when I receive real mail that the sender has actually touched.

With the news of another postage increase in February, I quickly packed a small box.

I bought a micro scale to weigh ever shrinking allowed baggage for traveling; the kind you hook whatever you want to weigh. This was so handy to weigh a package. (I put it in a plastic bag to weigh)

Filling out a customs form for international mail can be complicated; the necessary form changes depending on weight, size and value.
Even though I'm usually sending gifts, I still need to list everything, and unfortunately this takes the "Surprise!" aspect out of  "the gift".
But I'm thankful that despite all the difficulties they are having, U.S. Mail is still available and affordable.

This is for Mom, hopefully it'll get there before Valentin's Day.

And for the scale, I hope my personal fisherman will find it useful, too.

 ~  ~  ~

一石二鳥 : "kill two birds with one stone" 「ひとつの石で2羽の鳥を殺す(狩る?)」

wrong pumpkin

I was happy to find out that
a grocery store in my town started to carry Japanese pumpkins " kabocha".

The cashier asked me what it was because the UPC sticker was missing for scanning.

Come to think of it,
I have been asked about the napa (Chinese cabbage) and daikon (Japanese radish) at the register, too.

There are not many Asians in town.

Years ago, a little girl in a shopping-cart pointed a finger at me and screamed to her mother.
"What's wrong with her!"

I wept at home.

What's wrong with me...?
What did that stunned looking young mother say to her child?

Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. day.

I thought about that little girl.

Christmas spirit

My thoughts on every Christmas are;

"Although I'm not a Christian, may I join you to celebrate the Christmas spirit?"

I decorate modestly.

Our tree is slim and small, but we manage to place a few (modest) gifts underneath,
and a stocking stuffer or two, of course.

Since I could't knit to give this year, I made ten fleece blankets for local children.

For the children who has to spend Christmas in a hospital.

May the colorful blankets help brighten their spirit.

mistrial

The trial was declared a mistrial when deliberation resulted in a hung jury.

I am frustrated and angry.

This criminal case was about a jewelry store burglary.

I'm eternally grateful -that it wasn't a murder case.

selected

I've been selected to serve on jury duty.

I can't sleep.
I can't eat.
I can't talk about it.

I am dead-tired.

Jury duty

I've received a jury summons.
The interview process will start at 8 AM, Monday.

I think the chances are slim for me to be selected, and I'm told that a typical trial will end in two to four days.
Still, this is a crazy busy time.
I have finished my Christmas shopping on-line, having various companies wrap and send the gifts for me -just in case I'm not able to do so.
It sounds awfully impersonal, doesn't it?  I feel guilty and relived at the same time.

The security in the courthouse is very strict.  I have cleaned my purse and removed a sawing kit, a tape measure, and a crochet hook.
I can't knit while I wait (probably all day) since knitting needles are prohibited in the building.  sigh...
They request business casual attire, but jeans are okay.
We are told not to wear a uniform, nor wear perfume as some people are highly allergic.

Ordinary people deciding other people's fate -what an awesome responsibility.

Wish me luck.

empty house

After Thanksgiving,
a lively dinning room has become quiet...

Children's laughter, the sound of a violin and guitars in the family room are gone...

It feels empty.

Still...

The pumpkin pies and eggnog's that we all had with calorie worries,

Many, many laughter's playing board-games,

Two dogs chasing balls in the park,

So many precious memories.

It will be a little lonely with just two of us in the house for a while.

December should keep me busy -very busy.

giving thanks

My uncle and aunt, a cousin and her family will be joining us from out of state this Thanksgiving.

Thank you, and drive safely.

wild turkey decanter, passed down from Grandpa

I had always thought turkeys were strange and silly looking birds.
Here is an excerpt from a Ben Franklin's letter to his daughter on turkey
-with my renewed respect for the bird.

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country...
"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."
                                                                                                                   Benjamin Franklin,  1784

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone.

autumn chores

The Halloween night was extremely windy, and almost all the hawthorn berries up front dropped and dropped and dropped...

I sure didn't want them sprouting allover the place, so I had to get on my knees and pick them by hand. Thank goodness for my trusty knee-pad!

And picked and picked...

The autumn chores continues like this in between snows here in Rocky Mountains.

And in between duties... or do my duty in between gardening -?
Anyway, Happy Voting!

Who done it?!

It's almost Halloween.
The Goblins are starting to be mischievous -they TP’d our front tree.

Who done it?!

crataegus crus-galli var. inermis  Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn

We are once again armed with 150 pieces of candy.
Bring it on, Goblins!

~~~
子供の頃玄関のベルを鳴らして逃げたことがあります
何かいたずらした思い出がありますか?
いたずらされた経験はありますか?
今、日本の子供達はいたずらしたりするのだろうか・・・なんてちょっと心配です
I've rang a doorbell and ran when I was a kid.
Have you been mischievous when you were young?
Or, have you been on the receiving end of Halloween pranks?
At any rate...
Have a fun and safe Halloween!
追記:104個のキャンディー・バーを手渡す
encounter
mule deer     ミュールジカ  July 28 2013
野生動物との遭遇はとても複雑
An Encounter with wildlife is a complicated matter.
あまりの被害の酷さにガーデニングをあきらめる結果となった人がたくさんいます
でも、それが希な出来事であるわたしの心情はこの順番に変化するのです
パニック
興奮
敬愛
記録保存したい
しばらく滞在して欲しい
不安
早く出て行って欲しい
I realize that there are many people who gave up on gardening because of them.
But, to me, this is a rare enough event that I feel this way in this order.
panic
excitement
admiration
desire to record the fact
hoping them to stay
concern
hoping them to go away
でも、写真にはパニック状態ばかりが表われてしまう
My pictures reflect mostly -panic.
きゅうりが美味しかったようです
どうして知っているのでしょうね?
They liked my cucumber plants.
How did they know?
geranium 'rozanne'
さあ、心を静めて平常のガーデニングを続けましょう・・
I must keep calm and garden on...
Christmas spirit
ピンポ~ン♪
ドアを開けると チャーミングなお隣さんが 「Merry Christmas!」
たくさんのベイクド・グッズ +マイクロ・ビール6パックをいただきました
トナカイのデコレーションが可愛かったのでご紹介しますね
" Merry Christmas!"
I was greeted by my neighbors when I opened the door.
They brought me lots of Christmas goodies, and I had to show you these reindeer micro-beers!
去年作ってお分けしたスパイス・ナッツの評判が良かったので またたくさん焼いて
今年はツリー型のグラスジャーに入れてみました
I have baked spiced-nuts again this year after great response last year.
I found tree shaped glass jars for them.
さて、今年の我が家のツリーは 鉢植えの Norfolk pine を飾ってみたのですが、
強い枝ではないので少ししか飾れず なんだか変なかんじです
ま、いいか・・
Decorating our tree for this year didn't go so well.
I wanted to use our potted Norfolk Pine, but its branches weren't stiff enough for many ornaments.
Oh, well.
Norfolk Pine  Araucaria heterophylla
結婚した年にいただいたオーナメントは もうすぐヴィンテージかな?
An ornament that we received when we got married.
Almost vintage, eh?
日本はもう、クリスマスですね
どうぞ楽しい、穏やかな一日をお過ごしください
